My student that I picked for my spelling inventory is a second grader in the early derivational spelling stage. She was able
to spell many of the blends and endings but had a harder time with the rr words and words that included ize at the
end. Her strengths included unaccented final syllables and syllable juncture. The weaknesses that I found while doing the
spelling inventory included harder suffixes and bases or roots. The instructional development needed for this student
would be focusing on harder suffixes.
Objectives for week:
The students will sort their words based on the suffixes
The students will write their words in their word study notebook and practice writing sentences using their words
The students will be able to recognize and spell the correct suffix
SOLs for week:
2.7
The student will expand vocabulary when reading
a) Use knowledge of homophones
b) Use knowledge of prefixes and suffixes
c) Use knowledge of antonyms and synonyms
d) Discuss meanings of words and develop vocabulary by listening and reading a variety of texts
e) Use vocabulary from other content areas
Monday
-the students will cut
and sort their words
based on the
appropriate column
-the students will write
their words two times to
become familiar with
the words and their
spelling

Tuesday
-the students will
practice spelling their
words while writing
sentences that are
appropriate for each
word

Homework: the
students will finish
whatever sentences
they did not get to for
homework

Wednesday
-the students will do a
blind sort of words to
understand the pattern
used to sort the words.
-if the students finish
early they can find a
book and do a word
hunt, this is where they
find words that go along
with their sort
throughout their book.

Thursday
-the students will
partner up and give
each other a practice
spelling test to prepare
for the test tomorrow.
The test will be in the
form of a blind sort
separated in columns
like their word sort with
words that I have
provided. These words
will be based on the
pattern used in their
word sort.

Friday
-spelling test using the
words form their word
sort. The test will
include 8 words that
must be sorted into the
appropriate column. Ex.
er, -est, -ier, -iest.
-at the end of the test
students will write a few
sentences about what
they understand about
this weeks sort.
