Learning Goal(s)

(Content Standard)

Literacy. L.2.1d-form and use the past tense of frequently

occurring irregular verbs.

Instructional
Objectives

My students will be able to identify irregular verbs. They will be

able to match irregular verbs with their present and future
tense verbs.

Assessment
(Criteria/Look Fors)

Students will come up to the board and circle which verbs are
irregular in my sentence examples. Students will also come
up to the board and move the
verbs under the correct
category, either irregular verbs or regular verbs.
Students that do not get a chance to come up to the board will
show me a
thumbs up if they agree with their classmates
answers. If they do not agree,
they will show me thumbs
down.

Introduction: First I will introduce their WALT, which is irregular

verbs. I will
ask the students to give me the definition of
what an irregular verb is. After
they tell me I will write it up
on the smart board. It will be the full, correct
definition.
Demonstration: I will then remind them that irregular verbs do
not follow the past tense rules, because you have to change the
spelling of the verb to make it past tense instead of simply
adding ed to the end. I will tell them that we
are going to
work on identifying these words in a sentence. First I will have
them give me examples of irregular verbs and what the right

way is to write

them in the past tense.

Participation: I will open the worksheet on the Smartboard with

the mixed
words of the irregular verbs and regular verbs. I
will have a few volunteers
come up to the board and
separate the next words into two different lists. One list of
regular verbs and the other of irregular verbs. Once the list is
separated I will have the students give me up something up or
down for if they agree with the list.
Practice: I will then bring up my three sentence examples that I
will write on
the smartbard before the lesson begins. I will
have a few students come up to underline where they see any
verbs in the sentence. Then I will have them
circle the
irregular verbs that they find the sentence. The students will
show
me thumbs up or down to whether they agree with
what their classmates
circled as irregular verbs. Then I will
write the sentence in past tense.

Questions

-What is an irregular verb?

-What rule does an irregular verb not follow?
-How can you tell it is an irregular verb?

Academic
Language Focus

Closure

-verbs -irregular verbs -past tense -past tense rules

Closure: I will go back to the first screen with the WALT on it and
the kids will give me the definition of irregular verbs again.
They will tell me how it doesnt follow the past tense rules.

Student
Accommodations

If there are students who are not understanding how to identify

an irregular
verb, I will work with them in a small group and
have them go over separating the verb list into irregular verbs
and regular verbs. I would also go other the
three sentence
examples and have them try and pick out the irregular verbs.

Self Reflection

I think that I have a well-planned out plan on how I will teach

this lesson. I
think that I have a lot of room for students to
participate and practice during
the lesson.
