Social Studies: Describe the history, interaction, and

contribution of the various peoples and cultures that have lived in
or migrated to neighborhoods and communities (DOK 1-2)

Access to BitStrips for at least two students per computer, if

not a computer for each student.
After teaching the students a brief lesson on the interactions
between Indians and the Settlers on the New Land, the
students will make a BitStrip of what they thought an
interaction may be like, which gives them freedom to make
their own story while staying in the lesson.
Instead of just giving the students a textbook to look at to
learn the material, students will use the Internet to make a
BitStrip. There may be a need for brief research, which would
also be done on the computer.

Activities

Students:
Students will work in pairs or
on their own and create their
own interpretation of what
an interaction would be.

Teacher:
The teacher would observe
the students' work, making
sure they stay in the general
topic.

For higher ability learners, I may ask them to provide more of

would research online. For learners with disabilities, I would

put them in a pair and still keep the project the same. They
will have their own ideas and imagination, so their partner
can collaborate with them and create the best possible
project.
After making the BitStrips and sharing their creations with
the class, we will have a discussion about how they may or
may not have learned more by creating on their own than
just reading about what happened. Then, I would read a
short story or document that is a real encounter between
Indians and Settlers, asking how it differs from what they
created and how it is similar.
