Making Flowers with Seeds

Lesson Title: Making Flowers with Seeds

(1) Perception. The student develops and organizes ideas from the
environment. The student is expected to: (B) identify art elements such as
color, texture, form, line, space, and value and art principles such as
emphasis, pattern, rhythm, balance, proportion, and unity in artworks.
(2) Creative expression/performance. The student expresses ideas through original
artworks, using a variety of media with appropriate skill. The student is expected to:
(C) produce drawings, paintings, prints, constructions, ceramics, and fiberart, using
a variety of art materials appropriately

Objective: To allow students to be creative while in cooperating the units


theme into their artwork. Students are expected to use art material
appropriately and convey a picture of flowers. Students are expected to
recall information from the books and discussions previously made to be able
to identify certain parts of a flower.
Materials/Resources Needed: Book: How Do Plants Grow? By: Louise
Splilsbury. Long vanilla construction paper. Glue. Assorted seeds (sunflower,
peas. Hibiscus, etc ) black markers, rulers,
Anticipatory Set: What do you know about plants? What do you know about
gardens? What about flowers? What do you remember from yesterdays book How
Do Plants Grow. Who has ever planted a seed before? Do you remember what the
seed looked like?
Purpose: Students will be able to identify parts of a flower along with expressing
their creativity in their artwork. Students will learn to think for themselves about
what they want their flower to look like, what parts of the flower they wish to label,
and what color schemes they want to use.
Input: Students need to be introduced to proper art material handling before this
lesson. Students at this age should be able to use scissors, glue, rulers, and markers

properly. They should also be familiar with how a plant looks and parts of a plant
prior to this art lesson.
Check for Understanding: The shape, parts, and labeling of the students flowers
will give the teacher clear understanding for comprehension.
Guided Practice: Students will participate making a flower with the teacher
(without labeling) before they began their own art. The teacher will allow students
to glue seeds down on her practice page to get a good understanding of how much
glue to use.
Closure: The teacher will close the lesson by reviewing each part of the flower that
should be labeled. The class will review how a seed turns into a beautiful plant or
flower. Along with allowing students to ask questions about parts of the flower, their
jobs, or any other questions that might come up.
Independent Practice: Students will complete their flowers made out of different
seeds. Students are required to make a flower but can go about it any way that they
want. They are also required to label at least 4 different parts of their flower.
Students need to use the marker and ruler to draw a line from the part of the flower
they are labeling to the word that goes with that corresponding part.
