Delivery of Instruction

In my classroom the delivery of instruction is almost a purely student centered

approach with a few exceptions that take the form of small explanations,
demonstrations, and readings. For Teacher centered the mentor teacher will read from
the book while students are required to follow along. However I have also seen the
students read while the others follow along. Direct instruction takes place almost always
before the class separates into small groups to take part in cooperative learning. This
direct instruction takes the form of a basic outline of the topic that the groups will be
conducting research on. However the primary form of instruction in the classroom is
student centered where the students become almost entirely responsible for their own
education. Assessments are informally conducted at the end of every class by
questioning groups on their progress for the day. Formal assessments are only used at
the conclusion of units of the textbook. These assessments primarily find out whether or
not the students understand the vocabulary from the unit as well as a few main ideas
that have been stressed by the instructor throughout the course of the unit. Goals are
not something that I have seen used in this classroom except for a single student. This
student is one of the at risk kids in the classroom. All at risk students are required to
develop goals for their individual classes and benchmarks are checked on at several
points in time. These goals range from educational to behavioral and the students
personal aides lord them over the students to generate extra push for the students to
accomplish their stated goals.
