Health Promotion Specialist: Kassie Legate

Date: 04/01/2015 Concept or Topic Foam Rolling
1. As I reflect on the session(s), to what extent were clients productively engaged in
learning? (Brief description of how they were or were not productively engaged.
Activity level does not equal learning)
Each student had their own foam roller to follow along with the demonstration. The students
had the opportunity to watch the specialist perform the stretch and then practice themselves.
The students at least attempted each stretches even though some stretches were more
challenging and painful than others. They had also had the opportunity to ask questions at the
end of the lesson. The health promotion specialist offered an informational worksheet
describing the information taught about foam rolling.
I think the clients were able to know, do or apply the following things from the
session I taught.
- Know the difference between the types of foam rollers
- Which areas on the legs to stretch and how to properly stretch them
- Know the benefits from foam rolling
- How long to hold the stretches
- When it is best to use
2. List one fitness component you emphasized/taught to the clients.
I focused on stretching and flexibility throughout the lesson.
Did the clients learn what I intended them to learn? Yes
Were my instructional goals met? Please list the instructional goal you had and
then discuss how you know it was or was not met.
- Background information on foam rollers/rolling techniques as well as an informational
handout on foam rolling.
- Basic foam rolling stretches with legs and describing the benefits of each.
- Properly performing each stretch by demonstrating, instructional cues, and correcting the
students form.
3. Did I alter my goals or my instructional plan as I taught the session? Why?
Yes, I gave more instructional cues for the students throughout the session since the
majority of them have never tried foam rolling before.
4.

If I had the opportunity to teach this session again to this same group of clients,
what would I do differently? Why? (Use instructor feedback here!)

If I had the opportunity to teach this lesson again, I would ask more questions to the
students to test their knowledge and evaluate their learning. I would ask them what muscle
group they are working during the foam rolling stretches.
