All Jews have a right to be naturalized Israeli citizens in Palestine and have a right
to the land as Jews. There are several historical, religious, and cultural reasons behind
this belief. While the Israelis have succeeded in creating their own nation state, they have
always deserved this, and will always reserve the right if they choose to do so. The
beliefs behind the Jewish right to live in their homeland stem from the notion that it is
their God-given or birthright.
The Jewish people have faced a long and historic process of reclaiming land to
create the new nation of Israel. Historically, the first attempt to get Jews back to their
homeland emerged in 1882 when Rothschild financially backed the Jewish settlement in
the area known historically as Palestine. This was further expanded upon in 1896 when
Theodore Herzl wrote Der Juanstaat. This documented the need for a Jewish homeland
and state and created the birth of political Zionism, which espoused the belief that
Palestine is our unforgettable homeland. Returning to Israel has several historical roots.
The Hebrew language, laws in the Talmud, the Torah, Jewish holidays, Jewish calendar,
and festivals were all originated in Israel and are designed around the seasons there.
In reaction to religious right to the land, Zionism was created. As Gelvin asserts,
Zionism emerged in the late nineteenth century for two reasons: First, Zionism was a
reaction to European anti-Semitism and various nationalist movements that excluded
Jews from political communities in the process of formation (Gelvin 14). Another major
religious aspect that plays a role in the right of return for Jews lies that they believe the
land is theirs based on religious history and ideology. Abraham is said to have two wives,
Sarah and Hager. The Jewish are said to be biologically related to Sarah, and the
Palestinians are said to be related to Hager. The Jewish claim that Hagar was just a maid,
Genesis 12:1-3 God acts upon a group differently for the first time, promising Jews
children, blessings, and land. The Jews have a religious right to the land, because they are
and therefore their biological connection to Abraham is the only one that mattered. In
the chosen ones of God. God has never single out favoritism to a group other than to the
Jewish people. God felt that the Jewish would leave the way morally for others and
should be an example to all other citizens of the world. In order to do so, they need to live
in their historic birthplace, where they were first chosen. Historically, Israel was where
the Jewish patriarchs such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob lived. As well as the matriarchs
such as Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah They are the original start of the line from
wish todays Jewish people descended. In the 17th century BCE a famine occurred which
drove the Israelites to move to Egypt. Moses then guided them away from the slavery of
Egypt because he had received the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. After 40 years of
living in the Egyptian desert the Israelites were able to form Jewish monarchy under King
Saul in Israel. After King Sauls reign, King David took the lead and named Jerusalem as
the capital of Israel. Under King Davids sons rule, Solomon, Babylonia conquered
Israel and completely destroyed their temple and all they had created. The Jewish people
were expelled. After this occurred, they had no homeland and their customs were seen as
strange to others, which they were persecuted for. The discrimination forced them to live
in Ghettos, further retracting them from others. The expulsion of the Jews from their
homeland is the primary basis in their Right to return to their land. While in the 1800s the
Jewish were granted more civil liberties, anti-Semitism still grew and the Holocaust still
took place. The Zionist movement after the Holocaust finally allowed for the Jewish
people to be safe again.
While Israelis believe that Palestinians can live in their land, they still believe the
land is rightfully theirs. One reason behind this belief is that Jews feel that Palestinians
are of Arab descent and can live anywhere in Arab lands.
The Jewish people have gone through unspeakable cruelty in events such as
Shoah or the catastrophe. After going through so many horrific events, they deserve to
live in their homeland of Israel.
Israels Declaration of Independence explains several reasons why they deserve to
return to their homeland and have political independence. One of the reasons that Jews
should have their homeland is their right to self-determination. This is important in the
Declaration because it is made clear that the Jewish were not returning to their homeland
because of the beliefs of other nations, but rather because it was their birth right to live
there.
While not all Jews are Zionists, their beliefs is what allowed for the Right of
Return. Their primary goal was to get a national home for the Jewish people in Israel,
which they claimed to be rightfully theirs.
The Jewish people have a right to their homeland because they originally settled
and established their land and it was wrongfully taken from them. It is their historical
right to live somewhere that they established. They created the starting point for the
community in the land, and others tried to unjustly live off of what they had created. Not
only did the Jewish people originally have their independence, but also they had it for
more than 400 years, which is longer then Americans have enjoyed their independence. If
today in America our land were taken away from us we would be fighting tooth and nail
to get back what we saw as rightfully ours; which is exactly what the Jewish people did.
While Arabic become the common language after the Muslims invaded Israel, there was
never an independent Palestinian state, and they had taken it from the Jews. In fact,
Palestine is a land that historically doesnt technically exist, but rather just considered a
part of Southern Syria.
While the Law of Return allows for Jews to automatically become citizens, it does
not prevent others from becoming citizens as well. The Jewish people deserve to have
independence in the nation that was originally theirs, yet they are still not discriminating
against others who wish to live there as well. Who could argue that people dont have the
right to live in their own homeland, especially when it allows for others to live there was
well?
