Think About
This model transfers rotary motion from
one gear to another using chain!

The teeth of the input and output sprockets

(gears in a chain drive) mesh with the chain
links. Chains are made up of a series of
links or loops hooked together. Chains are
often made out of metal or plastic.
A rotating gear moves a chain as the gear
teeth mesh with individual chain links and
pulls them along. The chain links in turn
rotate another gear.

A chain drive is a way of transmitting

mechanical motion from one place to
another.

Chain drives can be used to transmit

motion and can be applied in many different ways! Chain drives are often used to
convey power to the vehicle wheels such as
bicycles and motorcycles. A chainsaw uses
chain as an output mechanism to cut
wood!

Now Try
Switch the motor on and run the rotating chain on a sheet of paper. Test and evaluate
your model. Does the chain rotate the end gear? Does the chainsaw cut the paper?

c. Is a system
d. All of the above
3. In general, chain drives can be found ...
a. In a doorstop
b. In a bicycle
c. In a basketball
