PLANNING

MOJO MAGAZINE
Before creating my own reader profile I wanted to look at other magazine media packs and
reader profiles. I choose one with the same genre as me rock/indie to get a feel of real media
products out there. I chose Mojo because it is main stream and popular magazine having a
circulation of 70,667 in the year 2014 compared to Q magazine having a circulation 0f
52,781 in 2014. I want to used their conventions to influence my own work. A Mojo reader is
dominantly male and it aims at the 45-50 age bracket. I am trying to go for a younger mixed
gender audience.
A typical reader has a job, is
interests in the rock and indie
genre, they enjoying discovering
new bands/artists as well as going
to many concerts (more than
festivals). They prefer darker
shades of colours although their
fashion sense is very alternative
at times.

This media Pack has been made

purely on my questionnaire
investigations. This shows that all of
my audience are the younger
generation so I need to take into
consideration advertising platforms
with new media technologies. Also
due to their demographic status it
gives me a price range that they
would be able to afford on a
magazine having 64% in the ABC1
bracket having quite a bit of
disposable income; however the
main age bracket is 17-23 which is
the age of students who have a less
disposable income, there has to be a
balance in the pricing of my

Reader profile.
This is Harry Otoole, he is 18 year old male and is passionate
about rock / indie to pop / indie music. This influences a lot of
what he does in daily life such as his social life, hobbies,
attitudes and his fashion sense. He loves to go to concerts to
see his favourite bands such as, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers,
The Kooks etc., with his friends. He loves to buy the SHOUT
magazine to find out about new upcoming bands that arent
yet mainstream, as well as finding out tour dates and what his
favourite bands have been getting up to. He follows fashion
icons such as Jake Bugg and Alex Turner (lead singer of Arctic
Monkeys), with the bomber jackets and dark clothing. He likes
to shop in clothing shops such as Top man and Burton. His
hobbies include playing guitar and creating music, he also love
the colour, dark green.
He loves to share his love for music on social networking
websites such as Facebook and Instagram which is advertising
of those bands/artists.

MOOD BOARD

I have chosen to
have a female model
because I am using
Laura Mulveys
theory of Male Gaze
that women are
objectified in the
media industry. For
example in my
research the Rolling
Stones cover uses
Mulveys theory for
Lana Del Rey.
However in this case
this will promote my
magazine having an
attractive women for
men and women will
want to buy the
magazine because
they see an
attractive women
being successful. So

Location
I have three locations in where to take my shoot for my magazine.

I thought about Hyde park in London, but due to transport funds

this was eliminated.

My second choice was the photography

studio at college, being a photography
student I have access to this facility.

My third option was outside my college

building rotherfield.
I have chosen to have my shoot in the college studio,
this will be good because I can alter the mise en
scene to my own liking. Also there wont be people in
and out of the shot by walking passed. So this was
the best option.

COSTUMES/MAKE UP
For the costume of my model I
decided I wanted her to wear
darker colours, due to the make
being bright with red lips. I came
down to these I as I said I wanted
to use Laura Mulveys theory of the
Male Gaze and this is what I am
trying to create with the short
skirt; however I am not sure what
my audience think so I asked them

two won, from
verbal feedback
they liked the
skirt but not the
top of the other
outfit, so I have
crossed the two
outfit one

outfits and using
the skirt and
jumper/top.

Male Gaze Make Up

The image on the left is a prime example of how the Male Gaze
is being used in music magazines. If we look closely you can see
how her make up has been manipulated to achieve this male
gaze.
So being influenced by this I have decided my model will have
dark eye shadow and red lips and nails. The colour red in the
right context can connote sex appeal and against black makes
it stand out.
Below is the make up I will be using for this shoot.

I believe this shows that my

audience tend to move toward
the more simplistic and less
creative layouts. So possibly
less is better, will have to take
this into consideration when
creating my products.

POSSIBLE FONTS
I sent out a questionnaire to Facebook and asked people
who fit my target group to answer which font they liked

INTERVIEW
I used my questionnaire results from my research and pre-exsiting interview questions (examples
below).

These questions apply to interview question (this is taken from my questionnaire

results in research) that my audience equally like to hear about my artist(s) social
and personal life as well as their career and they also like to hear about their
albums and new singles that are coming out and could be coming out. So they
like new information that no other magazine has. I have to take all of this into
