Teacher Guided Lesson Line, Slope, Linear Equation

SUBJECT
Mathematics 8th grade
DATE(S)
Fall 2015
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to understand connections between proportional relationships, lines, and
linear equations by:
-Using unit rates and proportional relationships to compare graphs, tables, and equations of
proportional relationships.
-Interpreting the unit rate as slope of the graph and understand slope of a line represents a
constant rate of change.
-Manipulating of a parent equation (y=x) utilizing multiple representations.
-Understand points (x, y) are solutions of the equation y = mx + b
CALIFORNIA COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS
Content:
8.EE 5. Graph proportional relationships, interpreting the unit rate as the slope of the graph.
Compare two different proportional relationships represented in different ways. For example,
compare a distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two moving
objects has greater speed.
Standards for Mathematical Practice:
MP1 Make sense of problem and perseveres in solving them.
MP2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
MP3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4 Model with Mathematics.
ELA/ELD STANDARDS:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.7: Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed

in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually.
ELD Standards: Collaborative, Interpretive, Connecting & Condensing Ideas.

LESSON RESOURCES/ TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

-Graph paper

-Power point
-Documents from the webpage.
-Graphing Calculator if needed.
LESSON INTRODUCTION
Students will discover the concept of proportional relationship through graphing and charting
relationship of old fashioned oats cooking direction, i.e., amount of oats per serving and amount of
salt added per serving.
LESSON ACTIVITIES
-Key terms will be fostered base on the discovery from the introduction activity, i.e., concepts used
to graph and chart relationship found in the cooking direction of old fashioned oats.
-The information will then be utilized to identify if two lines are the same. It will be up to the
student to piece the information together and develop their own understanding.
-The teacher will scaffold the information to assist the students in their discovery, i.e., hinting
possible ways of identification.
-The student will pair up and practice identifying identical lines using concepts established, i.e.,
slope, linear equation, finding the slope from two coordinatesetc.
-The students will defend and critique each others rationale in the process.
LESSON CLOSURE
-Students will turn in their partner work and the teacher will guide a discussion base upon the
students work.
ASSESSMENT (FORMATIVE AND/OR SUMMATIVE)
-Accessing prior knowledge/progress monitoring: Old Fashioned Oats Activity
-Formative assessment: Partner Activity - Matching Lines.
ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS
-
-

Students will be paired strategically to help foster the students development in both the
content and English language.
Webpage will be set up for possible use of Google translate.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

-Accommodations will be made according to students IEP.
-Possible accommodation include audio recording of the lesson.
