speculators?
A report said that the
Department of Defence did not
have enough money to maintain
its vast property portfolio, and
recommended selling 17 bases
(Ambitious plans for Irwin
Barracks, POST, April 4).
Will these be sold at bargainbasement prices like the $100
million price tag put on the
housing lots at the SAS barracks in Swanbourne, near
the ocean?
And the Coalition plans to
sack hundreds and hundreds of
departmental administrators.
No wonder there is a
money shortage, if the Abbott
Government among its many
amusing blunders, is going to
spend millions of dollars sending a few soldiers to teach the
Iraqis how to fight.
Again.
Giving gifts to speculators
and investors is a habit, also,
of the Coalition running the
WA government.

Charlotte follows in
McCartneys footsteps
By DAVID COHEN
Charlotte Viney and Paul
McCartney have more than
one thing in common.
Both are songwriters and
both wrote the scores of popular songs before deciding on
the lyrics.
Charlotte, a Year 10 student
at Methodist Ladies College,
won the schools 14- and-under

She learnt piano when

living in Japan.
Charlotte said the crowd
erupted when it was announced she had won her

Rileys death
finds purpose
By DAVID COHEN
Claremont couple Catherine
and Greg Hughes called their
baby son Riley because it meant
courageous.
It suited him from the moment
he was born, Greg said.
If he had been a girl we had
15 options.
But Riley stuck and we loved
it.
Riley died aged four weeks
from whooping cough on
March 17 in Princess Margaret
Hospital.
Since then Catherine and Greg
have been raising awareness
about the importance of vaccinations.
Because his death was so
senseless we have been trying
to find a purpose, Catherine
said.
The couple were unprepared
for the media attention, but say
it helped get the message out.
In the days after his death we
agreed it couldnt be in vain,
Greg said.
We wanted to do something
in his honour, and we are very
proud of what he has achieved
so far.
Catherine (28) is a Suzuki violin
teacher and went to Hollywood
Primary School and Shenton
College.

While at the Gill Street home he stole property, including jewellery valued at $3700 but
left his DNA on the shaver.
On Monday, Supreme Court judge John
McKechnie sentenced Boccamazzo to six years
jail for seven crimes, including the Gill Street
burglary.
Justice McKechnie described Boccamazzos
actions on November 9 last year as a crime
spree.
Boccamazzo (30) stole a car after telling an
eight-year-old boy to get out of it and waved
a replica pistol at several drivers and cabbies.
You told the pre-sentence report writer
that you had little recollection of the events
because you were fried on drugs at the time
and barely remembered what you did, Justice
McKechnie said.
Boccamazzo, who was made eligible for
parole, was also fined $6650 for various offences.

we measure an intermediate

They marched into Mena

along with the 9th, 10th and
12th Battalions that comprised
the 3rd Brigade, they joined the

The next four weeks at Mena

At the same time back home,
his brother George (now 19)

Just after midday on April

the 11th Battalion landed from

The battalion diary meticulously details the plan for the
landing where the men would

Congratulations to
Cambridge Bowling
Clubs mens mid-week
division 1 white team,
who successfully won
the flag and will be
promoted to premier
division.
The mens Saturday
premier division lost its
preliminary final match
but remains in the premier divisions.
Saturday morning
RAC games were
won by Jock Wenden,
Ian Cooke and Don
Quin, with Tony Letch,
Frank Oliver and Bob
Gauntlett taking out
second place.
The Easter Monday
three-bowl pairs competition was won by Joan
Sadleir and Warren
Smith, with Norma
Samuel and Jay Medhat
the runners-up.
The players and other
members then enjoyed
a very nice tea arranged
by MaryAnn Hart.
Claremont
There was a good
turn-up for Thursday
bowls at Claremont
Bowling Club last
week.
The winners were
the team of Norm
Underwood, Kate
Hiatt, Hazel Warr
and Peter Channer,
with runners-up
Barry Caporn, Derrick
Dimbleby, Ken Hicks
and Rick Kendall.
The winners of
Saturdays mixed
bowling
bowls were Dave
Leeson and Ireton
Parker from Ken
Hicks, Dot Leeson and
Derrick Dimbleby.
Dot Leeson won
Sundays scroungers
from Dave Leeson.
All members are
invited to the end-ofseason trophy night
on May 8.
Mayela had her last
shift on Sunday and
the club wishes her the
best in the future.

Nedlands
The new time of 1pm
for Tuesdays mixed
bowls brought a fine
result for the teams of
Peter Brown, Esther
Scott and David Hunt
last week.
They finished with
+12, followed by Celia
Bakker, Joan Robins
(pleased to see you
back, Joan) and Brian
Jackson with +10.
Thursdays social
play saw 26 bowlers
playing triples and
one eight.
The mighty McGlew,
leading a team of Tony
Quinlan and Peter
Prout, produced a
resounding win of +22.
Second, with an honest
result, was the team
of Ross McKenzie,
Ron Day and Don
Hicks +2.
In third place were
John Pole, Ric Mapley
and Peter Moulton
Hollywood
Subiaco
After a shock loss
in round three, the
Wandoo team of Aiden
Cunningham, Adam
Jongeling, Dan Mort
and Justin Karcinikis
regrouped to win the
Hollywood Naked
Feet bowls competition played over six
weeks.
They had a comfortable win in their
final game against the
Defects to sit on top of
the table with 26pts.
The Defects Peter
Diginolamy, Brad
Leite, Leagh Buckman
and To Tam Vo were
good enough to share
overall second place
with the Lizards Liz
Johnstone, Bill Gerlach,
Craig Crampton and
Brett Saunders.
Many thanks go to
Tony Byrne and Ray
Fells for organising
the competition and to
Pedro for supplying the
starving masses.
A cool balmy night
and a very slick green
greeted the finalists in
the 2015 club fours.
Rob Blythe, Rob
Appleton, John
Horsfall and Alan
Brindley (the Brindley
Bombers) went into
the game as favourites
over Grandad, Michael
Byrne, David Byrne
and Tony Byrne (the
Byrne Breakers).
The Breakers did
not even get on the
scoreboard for four
ends and then had
the score tied within
two ends.
The Bombers skipper kept creating problems for the Breakers
by reducing their score
or claiming the shot.
With two ends to
play the Breakers
needed four shots
to win, but again the
Bombers skip reduced
their scoring to two
singles.
Rob Blythe, Rob
Appleton, John
Horsfall and Alan
Brindley were finally
crowned club fours
champions.
Ptanque
On Easter Saturday
at Subiaco Ptanque
Club, the winner of the
ongoing Presidents
Trophy was George
Wright.
In second place,
with equal points,
were Steven Hellwig,
Lida Valkova and
Pennie Blackburn,
followed by Patricia
Leiskalns and Guy
Soubeyran.

There are two great pieces of live theatre for children, also centred around

In his new show,

has adapted Finnish author
Tove Janssons book into

For those who grew

There is something
hollow about our annual
Easter chocolate bonanza.
The short-term thrill
quickly fades in the face
of the mediocre reality
beneath the sparkly wrappings.
Its a far cry from the
beginning of the 19th
century, when the first
commercial Easter eggs
were made with layers of
fine couverture chocolate,
painstakingly handpainted on to porcelain
moulds.
That rare and expensive
treat has now morphed
so far the other way that
after the Easter bunny had
visited my neighbourhood
last week I was astounded
at the number of chocolate
eggs that had made their
way into my home.
What should be a symbolic gesture of change and
rebirth is now a huge pile
sitting in the usually wholesome family fruit bowl.

The CEO of Atlas Pearls and Perfume in Claremont is
selling what he says is the worlds first pearl fragrance.
Pierre said Wild Islands Pearl perfume contained
extract from South Sea mother-of-pearl shell.
The perfume had floral jasmine undertones, and was
rounded in rose absolute, ylang ylang, mandarin and
white musk.
If you close your eyes you can just imagine the waft
of white floral of frangipani, white sand and the ocean,
Pierre said.
The scent was created in Tasmania by Atlass partner,

Remembering Graeme
Pollock
Former West Perth architect Graeme
Egerton Pollock was remembered
as a loving husband, father,
grandfather and great-grandfather
at his funeral last week. Mr Pollock
was born in Victoria in 1927 and
studied at the Ballarat College for
Architecture. He worked as an
architect at Hobbs Winning and
Leighton Architecture in West
Perth, where he was a partner for
many years. He worked on many
buildings around Perth, including the
Sheraton Hotel, Perth Entertainment
Centre, Royal Perth Hospital, Christ
Church Grammar Schools chapel
and Lake Karrinyup. The eulogy was
presented by Mr Pollocks grandson,
Acton Real Estate agent Brent
Palmer.

You may love deep purple or
lime green but chances are
your potential buyers will not.
Mr Clover cautions against
renovating purely for resale.
Renovation often costs more
than you anticipate and may
not significantly increase the
value of your home.
Instead, he says, employ a few
inexpensive tricks to spruce
up your home such as new
taps, towel rails, door handles
or bench tops and speak to
a trusted real estate agent for
some advice before you make
a major investment.

a stylist consultation prior
to launching a marketing
campaign.
We have a great stylist who
will advise you on how to best
use what you already have or
who may suggest staging the
home entirely, he says.
Buyers want to see a
functional home and can often
find it hard to envisage what a

University claims
From page 3
Local Government Advisory Board
recommended that UWA should
remain with the western suburbs
councils, not with Perth.
Mrs Henderson said Subiacos
focus would be on defending the
rights and interests of residents
living around the university.
One of the issues the people
of the South ward need to make
very clear to Bill Marmion is that
they are unhappy about the suggestion that they are lost to the
City of Perth, she said.
Subiaco would carry out a second survey of residents in the
South ward, she said.
The state government plans
to introduce a new City of Perth
Bill into the current session of
Parliament.
It would incorporate UWA,
QEII and Hollywood Hospital
into Perth.
Youll be hearing a lot more
about activities in the South ward
in the next couple of weeks, Mrs
Henderson said.
Park shows
flair at fair
For a council whose future hung in the balance
just months ago, Mosman
Park and its residents
had much to celebrate
recently, culminating in
the Community Fair on
Sunday afternoon, March
29.
The fair, which came just
a day after the launch and
dedication of the Russell
Brown Adventure Park
in Minim Cove, attracted
hundreds of families.
The fair was officially
opened by deputy mayor
Ian Flack.
Community and sporting
groups and clubs organised
stalls to give out information.
Children took turns climb-

ing a huge climbing wall
that had been erected in
Mann Oval, while others
showed off hula hoop skills,
rode ponies, petted farm
animals and learnt about
wildlife.

Mattie Furphy House and
the superb Allen Park setting,
the heritage precinct itself,
are already very much on the
artist-in-residence map, Mr
Bibby said.
Mattie Furphy was the daughter-in-law of Joseph Furphy who,
under the pen name Tom Collins,
wrote Such is Life.
She was a noted arts and crafts
artist.

the lease on Tuesday night.
