2. Introduce the terms solubility, concentration, dilute,
concentrated and saturated.
3. Test the solubility of a variety of substances in water.
4. Devise an experiment to test the solubility of salt in water
as a function of temperature.
5. Compare and contrast solutions with colloids and
suspensions.
AEP Extension. Experiment with colloids by shining a laser
pointer through water with different concentrations of milk
particles to show how the milk particles scatter the light.

Separating Soluble Substances

Chromatography
In each case provide students with the theory behind each separation
technique, practical experience with each technique and discuss realworld applications of each technique..
As a final investigative task have students devise a way to separate a
mixture that requires combining more than one separation technique
e.g. a mixture of sand, iron filings and salt.
