Create a QR Code Hunt

Type the information next to each prompt.
1. Choose a topic: 6th grade physical science: atoms and properties of the
physical states
2. Identify the standards and write objectives:
6th Grade Science Standards:
1. Physical Science
1. All matter is made of atoms, which are far too small to
see directly through a light microscope. Elements have
unique atoms and thus, unique properties. Atoms
themselves are made of even smaller particles
a. Identify evidence that suggests there is a
fundamental building block of matter
2. Atoms may stick together in well-defined molecules or
be packed together in large arrays. Different arrangements
of atoms into groups compose all substances
a. Explain the similarities and differences between
elements and compounds
3. The physical characteristics and changes of solid, liquid,
and gas states can be explained using the particulate
model
Objectives:
Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of atoms and the
states of matter by participating in a QR code hunt. They will be able to
identify characteristics of atoms, elements, and compounds, as well as
the states of matter: liquid, solid, and gas.
3. Determine how you want students to proceed through the QR code
hunt and what they are to do with the information or what they are to
do at each clue. Describe your method here:
Students will be in groups with at least one mobile device that can
scan the QR codes. They will start with a designated scanner, QR code
seeker, and answer writer. Then they will rotate the jobs for each
question so that every student gets a chance to scan. We will start by
practicing several QR codes with the entire class so that everyone
knows what they are doing. QR codes will be hidden around a certain
section of the school and the students will be allowed to go through the
school (quietly and no running) to go find the QR codes and answer the
questions on a piece of paper. The first group back with all of the
correct answers will get an award. Then the whole class will reconvene
and discuss the answers. Students will be seeking the QR codes to find

the 10 questions, they will have to discuss among their groups to come
up with an answer for the question. The QR codes will not provide them
with an answer, but if they must look up an answer they can do so on
their mobile device. If they have to look up the answer, then they have
to indicate that on their paper.
4. Write at least 10 questions or prompts (see table below):
Question:

Correct Answer:
1. What is the simplest
The atom.
unit of matter?

2. I am a pure chemical
substance that consists of
only one type of atom.
You find me on a periodic
table, what am I?

An element.

3. Give an example of an
element.

Any example off of the

periodic table of the
elements is
acceptable. Students
should have been
learning about the
elements because this
is a wrap up activity,
and they should know
at least one.

4. What forms when

different atoms begin
sticking together?

Molecules form

5. I am anything that has

volume or mass, what am
I?

Matter is anything that

has volume or mass.

6. I conform to the
container that I am
placed in and my
particles are fast moving
and not in any pattern,
what am I?

A gas.

7. I maintain my shape
and volume. I am
generally rigid and my
particles line up in a
pattern, what am I?

A solid.

8. What does the atomic

number tell you?

It tells the number of

protons that the
nucleus of the atom
has.

9. What is housed in the

nucleus of an atom?

The nucleus of an
atom contains
neutrons and protons.

10. What is it called when

a liquid changes to a gas?

Vaporization

5. Create a QR code for each question/prompt. Copy and paste the QR

code next to each question/prompt above. QR codes can link to text,
web sites, images, and more!
There are a lot of QR code generators. Some have colors, some allow many
options, some are just black and white, and some force you to download the
QR code.
This QR code generator allows you to copy and paste rather than download:

This one has lots of options and color: http://www.qrstuff.com/
