Coming in to this program, I knew very little
about the law and its impact on higher education.
Through my coursework, I have learned much
about case law and the impact that these
prominent cases have on my every day work. I
have also learned a great deal about contracts.
I have developed a better understanding of my
own leadership, but more importantly, I have
developed skills that help my students to identify
and develop their own leadership styles.
I have finally learned to say no and maintain
balance! I honestly attribute this one to having a
partner and a life at home outside of work; having
someone who holds you accountable for not
checking your email at 11 PM is important!
This is another area in which I feel like there is
always room to grow. While theory will remain
relevant in my work, the way it displays itself in
different students and on different campuses will
continue to vary, I am sure. However, I feel that I
have a solid foundation from which to move
forward.
Part 2. Reflection.
So much of what I have learned in the program has been supported by my work in my
assistantship and vice versa. I believe that coming into this program I had a good grasp on who I
was, what I believed, and how I would do this work. Now at the end of two years, though those
core values stay the same, the way that I display and articulate them has changed. Even more
notably, I am now more skilled in helping students to develop and articulate their own values and
competencies. As I look for work in student activities, I anticipate that I will continue to grow in
my own way, and will continue to hone my skills in working with student leaders as they grow
and develop in their own right. It is a journey that I am genuinely excited to pursue!
