University Recreation

About
University Recreation primarily serves students of WMU, but also serves faculty, staff,
alumni, and spouses. The Student Recreation Center (SRC) currently employees 5
professional staff members, 6 graduate assistants, and approximately 150 student
employees.

Facts
The SRC has 240,000 sq. feet of activity space, had more than 376,000 accesses
during 2013, had nearly 7,500 participants in intramural sports, 2,500 climbing wall
participants, nearly 14,000 fitness class participants, and was in operation for 102
hours per week during the fall and 108 hours during the spring.

Mission
The mission of University Recreation at Western Michigan University is to prepare the
University community for a positive, healthy, active life through recreational
programs and services.

Goals
Provide dynamic programs and services.
Develop and manage operational resources effectively and efficiently.
Integrate a multidimensional approach to wellness for the WMU community.

Method of Assessment
Data was collected using a survey that was sent to
students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Of the 1,310
participants, 913 of them were students. We primarily
looked at students for our data and of the 913 students
surveyed, 662 (72.5%) stated that they use or have
utilized University Recreation. The survey looked at
things such as satisfaction with facilities, programs, and
services, measured participation, and evaluated
programs and services that were used. They used
summative assessment. The reason for the use of a
survey was that most of the data is quantitative and it is
a low-cost option and has the ability to spread to a large
amount of people.

Project Goals
The goal of the project is to find out
whether or not the benefits of utilizing
University Recreation (UR) facilities
and programs align with their mission
and goals. The main things that the
project looks at are usage of UR and
how usage benefits students health,
wellness, and overall wellbeing.

Objectives
The objectives of this project were to
find out what the students surveyed
believed were benefits to utilizing
University Recreations facilities,
programs, and services.
