6. Reading closely literary and informational texts and viewing multimedia to determine how meaning is conveyed
explicitly and implicitly through language
a) Explain ideas, phenomena, processes, and relationships within and across texts (e.g., compare/contrast,
cause/effect, themes, evidencebased argument) based on close reading of a variety of gradeappropriate texts,
presented in various print and multimedia formats, using increasingly detailed sentences, and an increasing variety of
general academic and domainspecific words.
b) Explain inferences and conclusions drawn from close reading of grade appropriate texts and viewing of multimedia
using an increasing variety of verbs and adverbials (e.g., indicates that, suggests, as a result).
c) Use knowledge of morphology (e.g., affixes, Greek and Latin roots), context, reference materials, and visual cues to
determine the meaning of unknown and multiplemeaning words on familiar and new topics.
Big Ideas:
What is cause? What is effect? What are the relationships between cause and effect? How does it apply in real life
situations and in fictional text? What are word clues for cause and effect?
Unit Summary:

multiple-meaning words for words found in these texts by writing new words in a vocabulary matrix.

confirm that the students understand
cause & effect relationships as well the
content of the text.

ball with questions, vocabulary,
examples, etc. written on it. Students will

an example of what it is asking
Matching- Students will get a piece of
paper with either a cause or an effect.

and do a quick summary of their two
other peers article.

Objective:
Identify the
relationship between
cause and effect
implied and explicit.
Acceptable Evidence:
Students will fill out
the guided notes as a
form of a study guide.
The teacher will ask
them questions
throughout the

the activities found
within the teachers

Lesson Activities:
Students will fill out a guided note to fill out the most
important information of the teachers lecture. They will also
do some practice identifying cause and effect and go over it
in class. At the end of the lecture, they will create a mini
story with a cause leading to effects. As an overview, they
will be asked questions to see if they understood the
presentation, which is the introduction to the lesson.
Acceptable Evidence:
Students will fill out
the Webercise and
then share it in
groups to see they
understood the
assignment. If one
student does not
understand a question
of the assignment,
then his/her peers will
ask him/her questions
that will lead his/her
peer to think deeper
instead of giving
him/her an straight
