PHONEMIC AWARENESS: LONG VOWEL SOUNDS

SUMMARY OF WHY THIS
PLAN SHOULD BE USED/
WHAT NEEDS IT MEETS

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and identify individual letter sounds,
or phonemes, in words. To build your students phonemic awareness it is
important to be able to recognize the different sounds that vowels make. This
lesson will help you and your student practice long vowel sounds. Long vowel
sounds are when the vowel says its name.

STANDARD

1.RF.2.a Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in spoken single syllable
words.

OBJECTIVE

Student will be able to identify pictures and sort them based on the long vowel
sound they hear in the word.

INSTRUCTIONAL INPUT
(TEACHING THE SKILL)

Give your student a stack of pictures that represent single syllable words and
have a long vowel sound in the word. Ex: cake, rake, bike, light, pea, cheese,
cone. Show your student each card one at a time and say the word to them.
Ask your student to repeat the word back to you, if they are able, to check for
understanding of the picture name and corresponding long vowel sound.

GUIDED PRACTICE
(PRACTICING THE SKILL
TOGETHER)

When it is clear that your student understands what the pictures are and he or
she can identify the long vowel sounds in the word, practice sorting the
pictures in to piles based on their long vowel sound. You can create piles in
different ways. Try using cups and labeling them each A, E, I, O, U. Practice
with your student to sort the pictures in to the cups. Or, label 5 pieces of paper
each with a vowel. Practice with your student to sort the pictures in to piles on
the corresponding papers by matching pictures with the vowel that they hear
in the word.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

When your student understands the process of sorting the pictures and can
say the word and hear the vowel sound in the word, give your student a new
set of pictures. Ask them to look at the picture, say the name of the picture,
and sort the picture in to a pile labeled with the vowel that makes the long

sound they hear in the word.

ASSESSMENT

As you observe your student during independent practice. Use a tally sheet to
mark the number of long vowel picture matches that your student matches
correctly. If there is a sound that your student is consistently struggling with,
reteach the skill with focus on the sounds that your student is still struggling
to understand.

LIST OF ADDITIONAL WAYS

THIS PLAN COULD BE USED

This sorting activity can be used to teach and practice many different skills
related to phonemic awareness. Practice sorting words based on beginning,
middle, and end sounds. Or practice sorting based on blends of phonemes that
your student is learning in school.
