Protecting Angels At Risk

There are a lot of different reasons that can affect and individuals for being At-Risk. Not
having consistency in life can cause youth to have a greater chance to be At-Risk and suffer
academically wise in school. Parents that are not able to financially support their family. In these
situations the chances of being At-Risk are increasing. The chances for social growth and
emotional development can be affected. For the Last six weeks in my class EDU644: Child &
Family Welfare, with instructor Dr. Carter. During the course I learned about different distinguish
groups and behaviors considered that are consider at risk.
I learned about different organizations and resources for families that are accessible. I was able
to understand more about the different laws that are available to support families at risk. The
effect that being at risk has on the youth achievement in school. I learned what different models
and frameworks support the at risk population. In my final assignment I use information gained
and design and website that supports families in different at- risk groups as followed.
I have listed information and several agencies that offer support and helps with locating
resources in their area that can help support At- Risk families. My website has several different
pages with different topics and links. I created my website using Weebely. When you access my
site at http://bino2015.weebly.com/ you will see an inviting web design that displays
information, along with videos that offer different situations and support systems. The first page
you will encounter is my welcome page, this page is where you will find my mission and vision
statement. Along with information about me.
My name of my agency is called, Protecting- Angels At -Risk. I came up with this name after
getting feedback from my website plan. I wanted to makes sure that my audience understood the

ANGELS

message was that I want to help and make the person receiving the help understand that their
angel. Their child of God, there is known reason why they should feel ashamed because they
need help in different aspects of their life. I dont want individuals in my program to feel
ashamed of what has happen. I want to empower them to make a change and not to revisit the
past and to push forward in life.
Vision is to be able to reach as many families in need and hell the reach there full potential and
strengthen their family.
The Mission of the Protecting Angels is to protect and strengthen youth and their families by
providing resources that can prevent them from being At- Risk.
I would like to share a little more information about my life. A little bit about me

Hello my name is Brandi Gregory Miller. I live in St. Peter Mo. 20 miles away from St. Louis
Mo. I was born May 26th, 1979 in St Louis Mo to Stephanie, and Andrew Gregory. I am the
youngest of two. My sister and I are eight years apart. I grew up in a small family. I lived with
my grandmother and my mom and sister in St Louis. I attended church on Sundays and always
loved being with my grandmother. I graduated with my diploma in 1997 from the Parkway
School District were I attended from K-12. I had a teacher that I really looked up to. Ms. Ortega,
my 5th grade teacher that really changed the way I felt about myself, and life. I owe a lot of

ANGELS

gratitude to this lady for caring about my success in school. I soon found myself as a teen mom. I
gave birth to my so Andreus on September 14, 1998.My life would change from this point on. I
didnt let life get me down, I left St. Louis in May of 1999. I moved to San Diego, at the age of
19 were I lived for 10 years. While living in San DiegoI meet my husband Coley who was in the
Navy at the time. We fell in love and the rest is history. We have now been married for 13 years
now. While In San Diego I received my Dental License, and X-Ray in 2001 from United
Education Institute. I started my career as Dental Assistant and really enjoyed what I was doing. I
wanted to expand in my career and go back to school, to become as Dental Hygienist. Life went
on and my husband got out of the service and we moved to his home state of Alabama. I
continue my studies at George C Wallace Community College and started a new Journey. I
worked for AmeriCorps and was a Vista worker. I started a new job working for Alabama
Children Trust Fund. I than had my daughter in September 16, 2004, now two kids later and a
new career. During this time my son was diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, and Emotional
Disturbance, with very strong Impulsivity. I was then needed to be a full time mommy. I put
work on hold, focus on my children and continued to takes classes when I could. I moved to my
home state of St. Louis Mo. My home state and started another journey were I could get more
support for my son. This time it would be Child Care worker. I started working with children of
all ages and with different disabilities. I enjoyed it and stuck to it for about 10 plus years until I
wanted to work more with special needs. I enjoyed the environment of being with children and
teaching them new things. I remained in school the entire time, until I found Ashford. It was one
day I was at work and a co- worker told me about the Child Care Administration. Program. I
decided to call and here I am today! I am now currently working on my second degree from
Ashford. I receive my Bachelors in 2012 in Child Care Administration. I will graduate with my

MAED in July 20, 2015 is my last day of class. I will be the first in my family to receive college
degrees. I forgot to mention I was at- risk growing up with a single parent. I revisited being
at- risk as an adult, and having to make life changes. I figured out that there was no reason
why my family and I couldnt be happy, and live the American Dream. That is why this website
will really give you the resources that are life changing. I told you my story cant wait to hear
about your success. Protecting Angels, At- Risk wants to make a difference in someone else
life. Our organization offers support that they may need to conquer the different obstacles they
may face in their life.
The next page you come to will be titled Poverty, under this heading you will see three different
subheadings that have information about poverty, support and the different resources available. I
wanted to let my audience know what poverty was and the different static that discussed the
number of individuals that are at- risk. I wanted my readers to understand what poverty meant
since there are different meaning. The state of being unhealthy and not having the necessary
resources to provide for yourself or family. Facts show that in the United States there were more
than 3.5 million individuals that have experience homelessness, and 35% of the homeless
population are families with children. (foodoutreachamerica.org) The number of children that
are living in poverty is increasing every day. I listed serval examples of different individuals all
across the world that are living in poverty. The poverty rate here in Missouri is increasing every
year. The rate of poverty in Missouri has risen steadily over the past few years, up from 13.4
percent in 2008 to 16.2 percent today. (newstribunie.com) Numbers are alarming that one in
every four children live in poverty. To break it down it means that 400,000 individual in
Missouri are not having the resources to eat.

ANGELS

I listed the poverty guidelines that breaks down by family size what categories you as being poor.
I included a Video from YouTube that show what life is life for children in Louisiana that are
living in poverty every day. Things we take for granted that these individuals struggle to receive.
In the next sections of my poverty section I discuss different resources and support evidence
based programs that have worked and made a difference in individuals life.
The next section of my website talks about Child Protection and Child maltreatment and the
resources and support groups that are available and what to do if you feel a child may be
endanger. Child maltreatment is any harm done to a child that results in harm or threat to the child.
Child Maltreatment Resources and information is needed to families to help with some training
and help with identifying child abuse, and how to get the help and resources. Including different
answers a questions someone may have. There are resources and programs that can help
children that have been a victim of abused. There are different agencies that will protect children
and keep them safe away for harms. These section both discuss different frame work that works
and may improve individuals lives.
In my next section of my website I included information about Students At Risk and what that
involves and how to implement different programs that have success. I reflected on my week 4
assignment. I discussed what I needed to do to improve my website. I also include information
on school based efforts. I discussed my updated information that was added to enhance my week
4 assignment. I included a link to my website http://bino2015.weebly.com/ that showed were I
made the enhancements to this section. I then talked about what at risk was defined. At risks is
defined events, conditions, or experiences that increase the probability, but do not ensure, that a
problem will be formed, maintained, or exacerbated (Fraser &Terzian, 2005; Jenson & Fraser,

ANGELS

2006). I talked about Project stars a model program that worked on supporting veterans and
providing them with resources.
There are different outcomes that were taking in to consideration to make this program work.
The framework is where most of the outcome will occur. Modeling a successful program that
helps teachers and can be modeled. Will help develop and learn different teaching methods that
are geared toward teaching the at risk population. I discussed different methods and techniques
that can be used by parents to encourage success, in their child.
At-risk students should not be isolated because they receive instruction apart from the core
curriculum, nor should they be exposed to few instructional strategies geared to their needs.
Particular care should be given to the instructional process, and policies should ensure that atrisk students are the responsibility of all school staff. I gave examples of different programs and
Videos that disused at risk students and strategies. http://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED325597
Next I discuss a particular at risk group, and it is Veterans that are Homelessness. This section
really touched me because it hit closed to home. Me and mu husband were at-risk with our
family after my husband was discharged from military. It really took a lot for us to get back on
top. It was hard getting looked at if we were less than, looking for a handout. It was more of me
feeling ashamed to ask for help. I took pride in myself and started researching and seeking the
help that I and my family deserved. I discussed the different risk, and data that is associated with
homeless veterans. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans estimates that on any given
night, 200,000 veterans are homeless, and 400,000 veterans will experience homelessness during
the course of a year (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 2006). There is 97% of are
homeless veterans will be male, 23% are U.S. military veterans. (Department of Veterans
Affairs, 2008)

ANGELS

In this section you will find my link to my popplet that I created. I designed an mind mapping on
Homeless Veterans, it addressed strategies and different evidence based programs that supported
Veterans that were homeless the link is as followed .Homeless Veterans
http://popplet.com/app/#/2433445
In my Popplet I discussed different resources and programs that worked for homeless veterans.
The needs of homeless veterans do not differ from those of other homeless people. The National
Coalition for Homeless Veterans suggests the most effective programs are community based,
Nonprofit, "veterans helping veterans" groups (NCHV Background and Statistics).
There has been some evidence that suggest that some programs that veterans attend may have
better success rate than other. Having veterans being able to attend more evidence based
programs that have more proven success rates. You can get involved by contacting your state rep
and asking what has are is being done about the displaced veterans in your state.
Make a Donation to your local homelessness Veterans Service Provider in your community.
An evidence based program that has had much success and has proven to have success is the
Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team. (H-PACT) for short. This program has been around since
2012 and provides medical services tailored to the individual who is at risk. There are member
from all part of the health team that help provide services, mental health, substance abuse,
homeless veterans, medical needs. The program is tailored to prevent veterans to be homeless
and keep them healthy. The program is very successful for helping homeless veterans transition
into a more stable home. There are programs that help with finding a job that is more suitable
and healthcare that they can afford. This program has been able to change so many people
situations. I discussed more programs that were successful to veterans and included a video.

ANGELS

HUD-VASH program started in 2012 to help veterans cover housing expense. The program
started off with helping 35 veteran and now in 2014 they have helped over 500. The program
partners directly with a voucher-assisted housing program created by the VA and the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development they assist in providing long term housing.
(vaonlineservices.com) The program is needed because homeless veterans are not going to have
the financial support needed to have an home. The programs show success by helping raising
money to directly serve the veterans enrolled in the program. This efficiency allows the program
to keep costs extremely low .I have listed several different learning outcomes in my website
regarding at risk families, poverty, with child maltreatment and homelessness. I have included
different resources and strategies that can be used to help an individual in a crisis. I have
resources that will help in a time of a crisis.
My last section is the text documentation where I have included all my resources that I have
used for my website and paper.
