By 1943 World War II was in full swing. The Unites States had joined the war for the Allies. Nazi
Germany, led by their dictator Adolf Hitler, had created an immense amount of damage in Europe. Hitler
had invaded many European countries and taken over. Another event occurring during this time period was
the Holocaust which tortured and killed millions of Jews throughout Europe. Hitler was gaining power and
the Allies were having a difficult time containing him. This propaganda poster was urging Americans to buy
war bonds to support the war. The military needed money and a way for citizens that were not fighting in
the war to show their support was to buy war bonds to support the war. This poster uses techniques that
will draw the attention of those seeing it. The first image most people would be drawn to is the image of the
young girl. Her hair is disheveled and it appears as if she had been crying. Also using a child is a way to
portray innocence and purity meaning she does not deserve the torture she is going through. This torture is

being caused by the Nazis. The slogan Deliver Us from Evil is a famous line from the Lords Prayer.
People were very religious back then and this prayer was very popular which made the connection easily
recognizable to many. Also, during the war many people would pray for peace and safety. Underneath
where it says evil is a swastika. This represents Nazi Germany. Therefore, you can conclude that Nazi
Germany was evil and was causing suffering to an innocent girl. Even the color scheme of the poster
reinforces the darkness of the situation. Other than the Buy War Bonds being in blue, the rest of the
poster is only in black, gray, and white. The poster is urging Americans to buy War Bonds so that the
military can defeat the Nazis and end this girls and millions of other peoples suffering. It is justifying war
because it makes the case that this war needs to be fought because it is the only way to stop Hitler.
Germany needs to be stopped by any means necessary even if it means war. To conclude, The United
States fighting in the war is justified because they are doing what needs to be done to stop the evil Nazi
Germany.
