Perimeter and Area Task

Lucky you! Your family has finally decided to let you get a new puppy!
The only catch is, you have to do the research and present it to
them-- this research must include the type of dog you want, details
about the enclosure (fenced in area) that you will create in your
backyard, and the type and cost of the fencing you will put up.
Step 1: Choose a dog! Highlight your choice.
Option 1:
Chihuahua

What a cutie! This puppy will need at least 60

square feet of space to run around in, so you will
need to create a space that has at least this much
area. Since chihuahuas are small dogs, the fence
will only need to be about 3 feet high to keep this
puppy from jumping out.

Option 2:
Beagle

This dog will be your trusty companion! Beagles

need at least 80 square feet of space to run around
in, so keep that in mind when you are fencing off an
area in your backyard. The fence you use will need
to be at least 5 feet tall to create a safe space for
this puppy to play.

Option 3:
German
Shepherd

What a big sweetie! This large dog will need at least

100 square feet of space to run around in, so keep
that in mind when you are creating a space in your
backyard for him/her. Fencing will also need to be
at least 7 feet tall, as these guys are large and can
jump fairly high.

Step 2: Choose the fencing appropriate to your dog. Highlight your

choice.

Type of Fencing

Cost

3 ft. tall metal fence

$6 per foot

5 ft. tall wood fence

$8 per foot

7 ft. tall chain-link fence

$9 per foot

Step 3: Draw a sketch of your fenced in area below. It should be the

shape of a rectangle or square. Keep in mind, you must have a certain
number of square feet for your chosen dog (look on the previous page
if you need a reminder). Your area must be
at least
what is required
for your dog. (For example, I could create a 8 foot x 8 foot square
enclosure for my chihuahua, because this enclosure would be 8x8 (64)
square feet, which is more than is required for my dog.) Write the
area next to your sketch.

Step 4: Find the perimeter of your fenced in area. (Hint: perimeter is

the distance around the outside of the fence.)

Step 5: Use 2x1 digit multiplication to find the cost of your fence.
Multiply your perimeter by the cost of the fence you chose. Show
your work below.

Step 6: The attached grid paper is your backyard.

Place your fenced
in area somewhere in your backyard.
(Each square on your grid paper is 1 square foot, so if you created an
8x8 enclosure, your square would be 8 squares across and 8 squares
down.)

Step 7: Fill in the blanks below to complete your letter to your family!
Dear family,
Thank you so much for letting us get a puppy! We have decided on a
____________________. The fence will be _____ square feet.
(breed of dog)
(area)
