Solar System

Axis
An imaginary line that passes through
Earth's center from the North Pole to
the South Pole.

Rotation
the spinning of a planet or moon on its axis.

Experiencing Day/Night

Orbit/Revolution
One complete trip around the sun of
a planet

Seasons
1.Tilting of the
earth on its axis.
2. Revolving
around the sun.

GRAVITY
The force that keeps us on earth and keeps us in orbit
around the sun.

Our Moon
*Has phases- depends on where we are and where the
moon is located.
*Rocky surface- full of craters (more than 3 trillion)
*Moon orbits and rotates- JUST LIKE EARTH!
*The earths natural satellite
*Some gravity (you are your weight on the moon)
*We were the first to land on the moon!

Moon Phases
The phases of the Moon depend on its position in relation to the Sun
and Earth. As the Moon makes its way around the Earth, we see the
bright parts of the Moon's surface at different angles. These are
called "phases" of the Moon.

Tides
The changes in water level at the shoreline that are caused
by the pull of gravity between Earth and its moon.

Eclipse
When one object in space casts a shadow on
another.

Solar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse

April 4, 2015
Aug. 21, 2017

Solar Eclipse
When the moon is in between the earth and the
sun. Next Solar Eclipse (seen from Ohio- April
8, 2024)

Lunar Eclipse
When the earth is in between the moon and the
sun. Next lunar eclipse: April 25-26th

SUN
Our sun is a medium sized star.
It lights up our earth and our moon.
It is 875,000 miles across.
More than 1 million earths can fit into the sun.
It is about 10,000*F
It DOES NOT move!

Sizing up!
If the sun was a..
Giant pumpkin
The earth would be a.
grape

Objects in our Solar System

Meteor

appears when a particle or chunk of

metallic or stony matter enters
Earths atmosphere from outer
space.

Asteroid

metallic, rocky bodies that orbit the

sun that are too small to be
classified as a planet.

Comet

mixture of ice (water and frozen

gas) that are not part of a planet
(orbits the sun).
