Lesson Two: Salvador Dali Inspired Watercolor Animals

(Indirect Lesson)
Topic: Salvador Dali, The Elephants painting, and watercolor.
Duration: Two 50-minute class periods. (2 weeks)
Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to one of the
most famous Surrealism artists, Salvador Dali. The students will look at a few of
his works more in depth than the presentation showed from last week. The
students will also learn watercolor painting and techniques.
Materials:
Prezi Presentation
TV and Computer for presentation
Pencils
Sharpies
Watercolor sets and brushes
Standards/Benchmarks:
Standard 1: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Standard 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
VA:Cr2.1.4a: Explore and invent art-making techniques and approaches.
VA:Cr2.2.4a: When making works of art, utilize and care for materials, tools, and
equipment in a manner that prevents danger to oneself and others.
Objectives: Students will become knowledgeable about Surrealism and
Salvador Dali. Students will be able to apply knowledge learned to art-making.
Students will be able to learn different watercolor techniques to create a
watercolor painting based on Salvador Dalis Elephants artwork. Students will
be able to learn and demonstrate how to use art materials safely and effectively.
Assessment(s) of Objectives: The assessment to these objectives will be
in how students use their materials, and how their finished artworks look.
Anticipatory Set: Students will be greeted at the door and asked to quietly
sit down. The TV will display the beginning of the Salvador Dali Prezi, so
students will know what is coming up. After the students are settled, the teacher
will begin the presentation.
Input = What and How: Students will be viewing a Prezi presentation that
the teacher put together to help the students learn about Salvador Dali. The
teacher will discuss Salvador Dali, show a video, and show the Elephants

painting. The teacher will let the students know that we are going to be creating
our own surreal animals using long legs like Dalis painting has.
Modeling: The teacher will demonstrate some watercolor techniques. (Wet-onwet, wash, how to use brushes and paint) The teacher will show a finished
example of the painting.
Checking for Understanding: The teacher will ask for any questions, and
answer those that have questions. The teacher will also be walking around
watching the students complete the artworks to see how well the students
understand the assignment.
An Opportunity for students to explore a concept, find
patterns, and create understandings: Students will be exploring
watercolor and ways to create the surreal animals.
Metacognition opportunities: Students will think of an animal to paint. It
cant be an elephant like in the artwork.
Opportunities to apply learning to new situations: Students will
apply what they have learned the past 2 weeks, from the Surrealism
presentation, and the Dali presentation, into their artworks. Students will be using
watercolor paint.
Closure: Students will clean up 5 minutes before class is finished, and put their
artworks on a table to dry. The students will be informed that it is alright if they
arent finished, and will be told not to rush, because these artworks are going to
be worked on again next week.
Adaptations/Differentiations: Some students may have trouble with
using the watercolor or thinking of an animal to draw. I will tell students to make
up their own animal if they cant think of one to draw or how to draw it. If students
have any questions I will work with them one on one to help them best
understand.
