THE SPINNING EGGS

Lesson question:
- Which egg do you think is the boiled egg? Raw egg? Why?
- Why dont they spin the same at the same pace or speed?
Standards:
Common Core Standards: Science
-

S1.1a Observe and discuss objects and events and record observations
S1.3 Develop relationships among observations to construct descriptions of objects and
events and to form their own tentative explanations of what they have observed.

Lesson objective:

Students will spin two different eggs and observe what happens.
Students will describe why each egg is spinning differently.

Assessment:
Students will be given a worksheet with questions and
observations that they gather throughout the
experiment.
Students will record observations of the spinning eggs.
Students will answer questions on why they think the
eggs spin the way they do.
Opening:
Students will be split into two premade groups. One will be with
me working on a science experiment and the other will be with
Andrea working on Math
Procedure:
1. Anticipatory Set: Students with me will be asked if they have
ever spun an egg. Then I will hand out the worksheet with the
steps to the experiment and tell them to read directions and
start.

2.
Students will use the directions on the worksheet to do the
experiment.
3.
Students will first be given an egg with a dot colored on it and
one without (the dot meaning hardboiled).
4.
Then students will be asked to spin one egg at a time and see
which egg spins faster then the other.
5.
Once the students have observed this they will then be asked to
gently place their finger on the egg while it is spinning to almost stop
it. (Gently tap the egg so it doesnt break) What happens?
6.
Then after the students have observed what happened after
they will make their predictions on which egg is which, the hardboiled
or the raw egg.

7.
Once the students have come up with their conclusion they will
be given the worksheet with ending questions to answer.
Closure: I will go over the answers with the students and hear their
conclusions and tell them which egg is which.

Tiered by: Product/process?

Tier 1: Spinning Eggs
Students in tier 1 will be given a set of directions that tells them
the steps of what to do
Then once they have read the directions they are allowed to go
forward with the experiment.
Students spin each egg and observe the differences.
Then students will use their reasoning skills to answer questions.
Lastly students will try and make educated guesses on which egg
is which based on how it spins.
Tier 2: Math
See Andreas lesson plan for this tier.
Closure:
Students will raise their hands and tell me what they learned
today? I will also ask them to share what they came up with and
what they thought the reasoning was. Lastly the students will
hand in their eggs and get ready for their presentations.
Materials:
Pencil
1 raw egg
1 hard boiled egg

Spinning Eggs
Directions: Read the all the steps below once before touching any
materials. Once you have read the directions, make sure you have
each of the materials and then move on to step 1.
Materials
1. A pencil
2. An Egg with a dot. (large dot drawn on by marker)
3. An Egg without a dot.
Steps:
1. You are given two different eggs, one is boiled and one is raw. Feel
them, gently touch them and make a prediction as to which egg is
boiled and which is raw. (Question 1)
2. Grab the egg with the dot on it and spin it. (Spin gently so it
doesnt fly off the tables).
3. Then spin the egg without the dot.
4. Answer questions 1-3
5. Once you have spun the eggs and answered the questions you will
then go back to the dotted egg and spin it again.
6. This time, while it is spinning gently place your finger on it quickly
and then remove your finger. Almost like a gentle tap on top of the
egg.
7. Then spin the egg without the dot and do repeat step 7. Gently tap
the egg once while it is spinning.
8. Then start to think of why this is happening and make your final
observation and conclude which egg you think is which and why?
Questions:
1. Make predictions: Which egg do you think is hard-boiled and which
is raw and why?

2. Which egg spun faster? Why?

3. Which egg spun slower? Why?

Use steps 5-8 for these questions:

4. What happened when you tapped the spinning egg with the dot?

5. What happened when you tapped the egg without the dot?

6. Why did one egg keep spinning?

7. Conclusion: Which egg is the hard-boiled egg and which is the raw
egg? Why?
