L
eadership is commonly defined as a process of influence whereby the leader influences others
toward goal achievement. As a reciprocal relationship, leadership involves the efforts made by
leader and followers to accomplish a common goal, rather than a monodrama of a certain leader.
Among various types of leadership styles, transformational theory resonates with me most. The
theory is practiced by empowering others to engage in pursuing a collective purpose (Kelly &
Crawford, 2013). I would share my previous working experience in which I applied this
leadership theory.
I
used to be a physiotherapist before I immigrated to Canada. I worked in a neurology department
as a member of physiotherapy team which deals with rehabilitation of cerebrovascular patients.
In the unit, physicians, PTs, OTs and nurses worked together to take care of over 120 patients.
The turn over rate is about 12 days. We worked closely to smooth the job and the collaborative
work helped us unite together. Once, the head of our team happened to break her coccyx. Then I
was assigned to take over her job for two month. I racked my brains to think how to be a
competent temporary leader to make sure our routine work would not be affected by the incident.
Previously, our physiotherapy team was already pretty busy. More important, we were short of
hand at the time since the routine job of the head of our team usually assess and charge the
patients for rehab treatment. Personally, I believe a qualified leader should ensure each stuff
member has an adequate arena for the exercise of his/her talents. So, I held a meeting to discuss
the knotty situation. I addressed the priority which was patients safety. I shared my solutions and
inspired each member to share their ideas. Finally, we managed to come up to a feasible plan.
Besides our previous shared part of job, each one of us took more responsibility than before. I

would assess the new admitted patients. Each physiotherapist would assess their own patients
and report abnormal findings to me. Besides that, they would charge our own patient after the
rehab is done at the end of the day. To ensure the patients safety, when someone was doing
bedside job, there should be at least two physiotherapists inside the rehab exercise center. Also,
we hired a PSW to help transport patients to and from rehab centre. We did a wonderful job
during the two months. I thanked all members for helping me successfully accomplished the
task. They told me they felt like they are trusted and gain more confidence. To me, I obtained
more than I expected. I really appreciated this successful experience as a leader. By applying this
transformational leadership style, we worked more effectively and harmoniously than before and
after that I worked more like a leader even not formally assign as a leader.
A
s we know, health care is a collaborative working field which confront with inconceivable and
unpredictable scenarios every day. In my opinion, transformational leadership style fits this field
quite well. I am eager to apply transformational leadership theory in my pre-graduate clinical
placement which is a long-term care facility. First of all, I would recognize and satisfy the
patients needs, help to build up confidence and self-esteem, and advocate for my patient.
Moreover, I would participate and benefit from mutual discussion, share knowledge and get peer
feedback form within and outside nursing team. Furthermore, I would surmount my weak point
of being too shy to project my idea. I would try my best to be an active member and contribute
my full potential for the good of the patients, nursing team and the organization.
