way,thereareminorflawslikeoccasionalflutterorpeakdistortionoraquick
crackle(mostlikelyfromaloosepatchbaywire).Wehavedoneeverythingto
reducetheeffectsofsuchinstanceswithoutcompromisingthemusic.
VibesarenottheeasiestinstrumenttocaptureontapeandtheModernJazz
Quartetsconsiderabledynamicrangedoesnteasematters.Sotherearetracks
withsomepeakdistortionwhenanengineergotbravewithlevelsandthereare
otherswithtapehisswhenhebecameoverlyprudent.
Thissetbeginsatthebeginningof1956withthegroupsfirstsessionfor
AtlanticRecordsandchroniclesthe14studioalbumsthattheyrecorded
throughtheendof1964.Thiswasaperiodofintenselycreativecompositional
andconceptualinnovationforthegroupandmarksalogicalcutoffpointfor
thisset.
Theearlyalbumsareplaguedbymono/stereoissues.Forexample,thestereo
mastersonsessionsA&Bareverypoorlyrecordedandwehaveoptedforthe
farsuperiormonomasters.Twotunesonthestereomasteraredifferent
performances.ThestereomastersforsessionChaveaterriblehumsoweagain
optedforthemonotapes.ThereisastereoalternateofSunDance.Theseand
otheralternatetakesgeneratedbydifferentmonoandstereomastersappearat
theendofdiscsixwhichistheonlyCDthatwasnotyetfullyloaded.
Forreasonsofsizeandrepetitionofrepertoire,wehavenotincludedthelive
recordingsfromthespring1960Europeantour,releasedasEuropeanConcert
andDedicatedtoConnie,bothofwhichareorhavebeenavailableonCD.In
1965,thequartetrecordedJazzDialogue,astudioalbumwhichrevisitedolder
materialwithbigbandbackdrops.Thiswasfollowedbyasuccessionoflive
albumswhich,whileexcellent,introducedlittlenewrepertoireandbrokeno
newground.SothePorgyAndBessalbumseemedthelogicalstoppingpoint.
