HermetowasbornonJune22,1936,andwithhimtheworldgotasourcefromwhichmusicflowsasifit
wouldbeholywater.Theironscrapsofhisblacksmithgrandfather,thebirdssongscapturedinthe
papayaleafstemflute,IndianssinginginthenightofAlagoas,thepiouswomeninthelittlechurch,all
wasSound,anditcontinuestobe.Hermetolearnedhowtolearnwiththesoundsoftheworld,andhis
musicalconceptshavegrownandtravelled,goingmuchfartherthanwhatourearthlyearsmight
apprehend.FromtheremotecornersoftheUniversehebringsusunexpectedcolors,flavorsand
timbres,alwaysperfumedwithanaturalandspontaneousBrazilianfeeling.ThankstoHermetoPascoal,
allthemusiciansoftheworldcanreachthehighestlevelsofindividualandcollectivedevelopment.His
legacyisthegreatesttreasureofourartinthelast75years.
75yearsoflife,75yearsofSound,withacapitalS,auniversalforcelikeLight,FireandGravity.The
ChamphasnotimetonotmakeMusic.Awhileago,hepresentedmewithcopiesofsomenotebooks
wherehehadbeencomposingseveralthemes,offofhishead,mostlywithoutusinganyinstruments,
pluckingfromhismindthenotes,rhythmsandchords.Leafingandplayingthroughtheseinvaluable
gifts,IfeltthatthebestwaytohonormyTeacherandMentorforhis75yearsofSoundwouldbeto
shareabitofthiswealthwithallmusiciansoftheworld.Technologyallowsustodisseminateallthisina
fewinstants,justlikeHermeto,totallyanalogical,preandposttechnological,capturedtherhythms,
melodiesandtheharmonieshereincontained.These41themesareheretranscribedsothatallmay
offertheirtributetowhomhasgivenussomuch.Enjoy.
Aboutthemusicnotationemployed:
Inpreparingthesescores,Ioptedtouseasystemofchordsymbolswithawideacceptancearoundthe
world.ItisimportanttoknowthatHermetoschordvoicingsalwayswelcometheupperextensions.
Therefore,amajorseventhchord,notatedbyHermetoas7+9andhereasMaj7,alsoincorporatesthe
ninth,sixthandoftenthesharpeleventhorflatfifth.Thatbecomesclearwhenyouseethefullywritten
outchordsthatHermetoaddedinseveralofthescoresinthisalbum.Thedominantseventhchordwith
asharpninthandaflatthirteenthiswrittenbyHermetoas79+13andhereitisspelledas7alt
(altered).AnotherchordthatisoftenusedinthiscollectionisexemplifiedasEMaj7/C,whichIoptedto
leaveinitsoriginalnotation.Thisisoneofthemostinterestingchordsforallthosewhomightwantto
deepentheirknowledgeofharmony.Play,listen,studyandseethesubtletywithwhichHermetoutilizes
thisharmoniccolor.Iuseboththeforwardslashandtheunderscoresignasanindicationofachord
overabassnote.Theiruseisoftendictatedbyspacerequirementsonthepages.
Aboutthethemes:
These41piecesrepresentavastarrayofmusicalstylesandlanguages,translatingtheessenceofwhat
HermetocallsUniversalMusic.Severalamongthemhaveacompletepianopart,whichcanbeusedas
thebasisforawindorstringarrangement,besidesbeingperfectexamplesoftheartofcreatingpiano
voicingsinanefficientandelegantway.Otherthemeshave2melodies,identifiedwithnumbers1and
2.Inthese,melody1representsthemainvoice,andmelody2worksasacountermelodyorsecondary
voice.Iliketoimaginethesefunctionsasconcentriccircles,withthefirstone(1)beingclosertothe
composersmelodicintention,andthesecond(2)showingpossiblevariationswithintheharmonyand
therhythm.Aninterestingwaytoplaythesethemesistotreatthemasawoodwindtrio,usingonlythe
2melodiesandthebassnotes,withoutthechords.These3elementssuccessfullydemonstratethe
harmonicintentionwhilethevoicesinteractwitheachother.AsHermetosaysonhisnotestothe
themenamed7dejulhode2006,Thiscounterpointisveryfastandpolyrhythmic.Toplaythismusic
