Category G: Observation and Assessment

Evidence in this category will demonstrate your ability to gather accurate, objective information
through observation and to use that information to assess childrens development and/or teacher
practices. Your documented examples may show how you use observation and assessment to
evaluate a childs developmental progress or may show how you evaluate the effectiveness of
your own teaching practices. Your samples may include any item that meets the criteria in the
checklist for this category.
Some examples are:
1. A description of how and why your particular observation and assessment tools were selected
and a completed sample of the tools to show how they were used.
2. Your sequential observation record of one child over a period of 3 months noting growth,
maturational and behavioral developments/changes.
3. A video or written description of you interacting with infants or toddlers during an activity and
an analysis of what worked well and why and what you might change and why.
4. A completed child portfolio including observations of the child, as well as developmental
assessments spanning a time period of 3 months.

childs development, or to assess the effectiveness of your teaching practices. It is different from

Category G: Observation and Assessment
3/30/15
My sample for Category G: Observation and Assessment is an observation of one of the little
boys in my care.
It fits this category because I by observing him, I was able to do an assessment of his
developmental skills.
I chose it as the best example of my work because I learned a lot from working on this
observation, I was able to find ways of helping him to learn more.
It demonstrates the knowledge I gained in the Infant Toddler Capstone class.
I learned about observing children and how I can use the observations to help each child.
My sample shows my knowledge of how to objectively observe infants and toddlers and use the
information to evaluate child development or your own teaching effectiveness by seeing if the
child is where they are supposed to be at developmentally in comparison to others in the same

age group. By observing children I can intervene if I need to, I can also help encourage learning
in areas.
