UnitPreAssessment:
Two weeks prior to the Unit, the students will be given an assessment
consisting of 10 questions. The questions include circling one of three images
that represent the United States, circling one of three images that does NOT
represent the United States, writing a brief sentence about what US symbols
stand for, and creating a symbol that represents the United States. This
assessment should be used to guide instruction.

Explanation of assignment (10 minutes):


1. Students will be given the choice of which of the nine symbols to draw and
write about.
2. The teacher will explain that the students are to draw a picture and write two
or more facts about the symbol they chose.
3. The teacher will provide each student with a rubric so they are aware of what
the grading criteria will be.
(ESOL/ESE: Model the assignment; write instructions on the board.)
Assignment (30 minutes):
1. The students will be given 30 minutes to work individually to draw a picture
of their symbol and write a couple of relevant sentences.
2. While the students are working, play songs from the following patriotic
Youtube collection: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=7KrrAlZ4mXU&list=PLGJoGBEV-_Xaz0-JTXcYH5xLoKx8plDcU
Each song could be pasted individually into SafeShare.tv in order to ensure that
no inappropriate advertisements pop up.

(GIFTED: If students finish early they can choose to either work on another
picture or create their own symbol for America.)
Presentation (20 minutes):
1. Each student will have a couple minutes to present their quilt block to the
class.
2. The students are to explain why they drew what they drew, read their
sentences to us, and explain why their sentences are relevant.
(ESOL/ESE: Incorporating writing, speaking, and listening skills in one
assignment.)
Materials:
1. Copies of the symbols quilt worksheets
2. Markers, crayons, colored pencils
3. A rubric for each student
