Unit Summary:
In this unit, students in the visual arts 9-12 grade proficient will be introduced to Wayne Thiebaud, Georges Seurat, Roy
Lichtenstein, Sigmar Polke, and contemporary artist, Miguel Endara. In the first lesson students will be posed with the question,
is there only one way to make art?, and introduced to an art technique called pointillism. In the next lesson, students will have
the opportunity to go in depth with Wayne Thiebaud, by completing a Webercise (guided research) on his biography and short
survey of his famous work. I chose the title 12 Days of Thiebaud because as you will learn, Thiebaud is a very experimental
artist. He uses many different mediums, and as the title suggests, this unit is composed of many lessons and techniques.
Students will be exposed to new multimedia materials and techniques such as: colored pencil, watercolor, crosshatching,
stippling, ink washes and bookmaking ideas to contain their mini project work from the unit. All of these techniques and
materials will be taught to the student, and on the last lesson in the unit, they will have the option to use all or selected few to
create their final project. Before they are able to reach this step, there will be value scales, basic forms, and one application on
something in regards to their final piece due before they are able to begin the final image. In addition to all of these projects,
students will have a couple short writing assignments that will be done in class in regards to material choice and influence to the
overall message of the work.
