Unit Title: Chemical Reactions in Our Daily Lives

Name: Mrs. Sanderson

Content Area: Chemistry

Grade Level: 10

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

HS-PS1-2. Construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the
outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical
properties.
HS-PS3-2. Design, evaluate, and/or refine a solution to a complex real-world problem, based on scientific knowledge,
student-generated sources of evidence, prioritized criteria, and tradeoff space.
Big Ideas:

What types of chemical reactions are there?

Where might chemical reactions be found in nature?
What is the purpose of periodic trends? How might they be helpful for people in the field of chemistry?
What elements/types of elements are fundamental for life?

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students should be able to:
- Understand different types of elements and their properties
- Analyze whether a chemical reaction is endothermic or exothermic
- Collaborate with classmates to come up with scientific solutions
- Find the relationship between chemical reactions and real life situations
- List and provide examples of chemical reactions

Unit Summary:

This unit is designed for 10th grade chemistry closely aligned with the California Content Standards provided by

California Department of Education. A series of interactive activities and lesson plans will be integrated into this
unit to help students better understand how reactions take place in everyday life. Students will also be utilizing
technology as a tool to better understand the concepts of chemical reactions in chemistry. Lessons will include a
wide range of exercises to engage students through more than one learning style. The primary focus of this unit is
for students to explore chemical reactions and understand their relationship to real life situations.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
Brainstorming of chemical reactions that
take place in the environment

Formative:
1) Ranking of most electronegative
groups to least
2) Quiz on exothermic and
endothermic reactions
3) Creation of flashcards with
chemical equations with examples
of each type of chemical reaction
4) Diagram of similarities and
differences between metals and
nonmetals

Summative:
1.) Infographic explaining one
chemical reaction that takes place
in real life
2.) Final presentation of
element/group of elements of
choice based on chemical
reactions that take place in our
lives

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective:
Students should
understand the
different groups of
elements that are
categorized by trends
on the periodic table.
This should help them
understand individual
elements and their
properties.
Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will
adequately follow and
comprehend the
lecture with write
along notes.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Students will view the lecture

presentation, Elements and Their Properties, and follow
along with guided notes. The guided notes asks questions
that are included along with the lecture as well as
information that is provided throughout.

Student Learning
Objective:
Students will learn
about the different
types of chemical
reactions that take
place. They should
also be able to
understand and
identify exothermic
and endothermic
reactions.
Lesson 3

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will
complete the
questions and
interactives provided
by the webercise to
show their
understanding.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Students will use webercise to learn more

about types of chemical reactions. The webercise is an
activity in which students will follow links that are provided
to answer questions. Some of these links will be connected to
digital interactives, and some of the questions will ask that
students work with a classmate. Different chemical reactions
are discussed on the webercise including: Combustion,
Synthesis, Acid-Base, Exothermic, and Endothermic. Students
will also be asked to classify whether chemical reactions are
endothermic or exothermic.

Student Learning
Objective:
Students should be
able to follow periodic
trends to correctly
rank elements in
order from most
electronegative to
least.
Unit Resources:

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will work
together and organize
the elements provided
by ranking them in
the appropriate order.

Instructional
Strategies:
Communication
Collection
Collaboration
Presentation
Organization
Interaction

Lesson Activities: Students will log onto intel education

website to complete the graphic organizer assignment. In
this activity they will work closely with a classmate following
periodic trends to properly rank selected elements from most
electronegative to least.
