To my wonderful 1 Purple Parents

A warm welcome back to Term 2! We are looking forward to a busy, positive and happy
term ahead, with many exciting events along the way. In this letter, we will be giving you a brief
outline of some topics your child will be focusing on in class and also important dates of some
events which are fast approaching this term.
Please remember to send a piece of fruit or vegetable to school each day with your child for
Munch and Crunch. It is during this time (9.30am) that students have a quick snack where they
are encouraged to eat something healthy. Please encourage your children to bring their library
bag on their designated library day. Homework (Bug Club, home-readers etc) will continue this
term, but please keep an eye out for specific information from your childs teacher in regards to
this.
Below is a short summary of what your child will be learning about in Year 1 this term:
Religion: How can we welcome God into our lives? Students will look at different ways we can
pray (e.g. mediative, mandalas). They will also be investigating the ministries of the church.
Maths: This unit focuses on collecting data, examining it and producing accurate graphs to show
information. Students will also look at measurement and how we can measure items using nonstandardised units of measurement. Addition and subtraction, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and
using a 100s board will continue to be an integral focus in Maths this term.
Geography: This term, students will be investigating the seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer and
Autumn) and will have further opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the seasons in
their local place and the changes these seasons bring.
Science: Student will be investigating how landscapes change. They will describe objects and
events they encounter in their everyday lives. Students will discuss the ways in which things
change overtime and look closely at pictures and photos of sites around the school that have
changed throughout the last year or two.
History/Dance: How can we show that the present is different from or similar to the past?
Students will use a range of sources to explore how aspects of their life have changed over time
through exposure to dances from the past and present (Heel and Toe Polka, Hip Hop) and images
and photographs. Students will use everyday terms about passing time to explain their findings.
To consolidate learning students will use the iPad app, Book Creator to create and organise their
ideas and findings about how the present is different from or similar to the past.

English: In this unit students will be exploring procedural text. They will continue to delve into the
world of the author Eric Carle and his picture books. They will engage with a variety of texts for
enjoyment, as well as listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal texts
designed to entertain and inform.
Technology: Students will continue to develop their skills in various iPad programs, with a
particular focus on Book Creator this term.
Students will continue to have specialist lessons (PE, Italian and Music) on a Tuesday. Please
ensure they wear their sports uniform on Monday and Tuesday. On another note, all students in
Prep to Year 6 will begin preparing for the Performing Arts Night which is to be held in Term
3you may remember this from last year. This year will be a little different for our Year 1
students. The Year 1 students will NOT be in the performance at St Columbans, unless they are in
the Junior Choir. Instead, they will be a part of the Visual Arts Competition to be held at St Peters.
Students alternate each year. Prep, Years 2, 4 and 6 will be in the on stage performance, while
Years 1, 3 and 5 will be planning and preparing items for the Visual Arts Competition. Students will
begin preparing for this in Term 2.
Lastly, Anna Shaw (APRE) is collecting 100 short stories for Anzac Day. If you would like to share a
short story (200-300 words) of a past relative who served in the First World War or other conflicts
in Australia's history, please either email your class teacher, or just write their short biography
and bring it to school. The stories could also be 'Letters from the Front' from soldiers themselves,
telling their own story about life on the battlefield. Mrs Shaw would like to have these stories by
Wednesday, if possible, so that they can be displayed prior to our Anzac Day service. 100 poppies
will be attached to these stories to mark the 100th year since our troops landed in Anzac Cove,
Gallipoli.
