SOL: VS.10 (a) SWBAT demonstrate knowledge of government by: (a) identifying the three
branches of Virginia government and the function of each.
Hook: What are the three branches of government?
SW look at handout of the VA plan for government with the three branches. Then from
what students read in the textbook yesterday, we will complete a chart filling in the
three branches and the function of each branch.

Day 5

Criterion: Students will complete chart with the three branches and the function
of each branch with 100% accuracy.

Tuesday

SOL: VS.10 (a) SWBAT demonstrate knowledge of government by: (a) identifying the three

Hook: What are the three branches of government?
Government Test: IA Assessment
Criterion: With corrections, students will complete government IA assessment
with 100% accuracy.

Day 6

Wednesday

SOL: 4.7 (a-c) SWBAT investigate & understand the organization of the solar system. Key
concepts include: a) the planets in the solar system; b) the order of the planets in the solar
system; and c) the relative sizes of the planets.
Hook: What is the solar system? What planet do we live on?
Read from McGraw-Hill Science Textbook on the Solar-System & Inner Planets (C80C83): SW read and fill in note pages on Our Solar System, The Eight Planets, and
The Inner Terrestrial Planets.
Criterion: Students will read and complete note pages on the Solar System &
Inner Planets, and respond orally in discussion with 100% accuracy.

Day 1

Thursday

SOL: 4.7 (a-c) SWBAT investigate & understand the organization of the solar system. Key
concepts include: a) the planets in the solar system; b) the order of the planets in the solar
system; and c) the relative sizes of the planets.
Hook: What are the eight planets?
Whole Group: TW guide students to complete pg. 161 in their Science workbook, review
the Solar System and Eight Planets.
With a Partner: SW use notes and textbook to complete pg. 162 What are the Inner
Planets?, as they finish SW begin pg. 159-160 pulling information directly from their
textbook reading.
Criterion: With a guidance, students will respond to questions on the Solar
System & Eight Planets using notes and textbook with 100% accuracy. With a
partner, students will respond to questions on the Inner Planets and the Solar
System using their notes and textbook with 100% accuracy.

Day 2

Friday

SOL: 4.7 (a-c) SWBAT investigate & understand the organization of the solar system. Key
concepts include: a) the planets in the solar system; b) the order of the planets in the solar
system; and c) the relative sizes of the planets.
Hook: What are the inner terrestrial planets?
With a Partner: SW continue to use notes and textbook to finish workbook pgs. 159-160,
pulling information directly from their reading.
SW read and fill in note pages on Gas Giants, using information that they read from
their textbook.
SW read and discuss Dwarf Planets on their notepages. SW discuss how Pluto is no
longer included in the list of planets. SW discuss what makes it a dwarf planet.
Criterion: With a guidance, students will respond to questions on the Gas
Giants using notes and textbook with 100% accuracy. With a partner, students
will respond to questions on the Inner Planets and the Solar System using their
notes and textbook with 100% accuracy.
