SOL: VS.7a SWBAT identify the events and difference between northern and southern
states that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia.
Hook: What is the Civil War?
Horizons pgs 172-183: TW guide students through textbook pages, while students read
aloud. SW take information from what has been read to fill into their note pages. SW
discuss reasons for secessions (Nat Turner, Abolitionists, Harriet Tubman, John Brown,
Abraham Lincoln).
SW work to complete Responses to Slavery flow chart. SW use textbook and note
pages to complete.
Extension: Students who finish will begin work on the Culpeper Gazette (filling in
information on important Civil War)

Day 5

Tuesday

Criteria: With guidance, students will orally discuss reasons for secession and
fill in their note pages with 100% accuracy. Students will complete Responses
to Slavery flowchart, identifying differences in nation/state divisions, and
violent/non-violent events with 100% accuracy.

that took place in Virginia.

aloud. SW take information from what has been read to fill into their note pages. SW
discuss the major Civil War battles fought in Virginia (Battle of Bull Run, Fredericksburg,
Richmond, Monitor/Merrimack, Appomattox)

Virginia and complete chart with 100% accuracy.

Day 6

Wednesday

SOL: VS.7b SWBAT describing Virginias role in the war, including identifying major battles
that took place in Virginia.
Hook: Where did the Civil War start?
Horizons pgs 187-193: TW finish guiding students through textbook pages, while
students read aloud. SW take information from what has been read to fill into their note
pages. SW discuss the major Civil War battles fought in Virginia (Battle of Bull Run,
Fredericksburg, Richmond, Monitor/Merrimack, Appomattox)

Virginia and complete chart with 100% accuracy.

Thursday

SOL: VS.7b SWBAT describing Virginias role in the war, including identifying major battles
that took place in Virginia.
Hook: Where did the Civil War end?
Finish up any discussion of Major Battles; and check student charts to make sure
complete.
With a partner, students will complete foldable activity on Major Battles of the Civil War
fought in Virginia. SW use notes and textbook to complete.

Day 2

Criteria: With a partner, students will fill information on to their foldable using
textbook and notes with 100% accuracy.

Friday

SOL: VS.7c SWBAT describing the roles played by whites, enslaved African Americans, free
African American, and American Indians.
Hook: Who was impacted by the war?
Discuss with students the four major groups or types of people living in Virginia at the
time. When a correct group is mentioned, write it on the board. Instruct students to look
at the four sections of their worksheet and discuss with a shoulder partner which group
matches each section (Free African Americans, Enslaved African Americans, American
Indians, Whites). SW discuss their reasoning with partners and orally with the group.
Criteria: With guidance and a partner, students will identify the roles of
Virginians in the war and what their role was with 100% accuracy.
