Part 1: Rhetorical Analysis (Essay Questions)

Know Ciceros 5 Canons of Rhetoric (class notes and handout)
o Invention
o Arrangement
o Style
o Memory
o Delivery
Know specific strategies a speaker could employ to effectively invent, arrange, write
(stylize), memorize, and deliver a speech.
o Know how to apply these strategies to various genres of speaking: Informative,
persuasive, and ceremonial.
Be able to very thoroughly evaluate a speech (after listening to an example) using the 5
Canons of Rhetoric (like we did on MLKs Dream speech)
o Questions might sound like, Discuss one invention strategy that was well-executed
in this speech.
o Be able to write about the speech, whether it was effective, and what strategies
were used (or lacking) in order to make it effective.
Be able to give advice to other speakers about strategies they might use to prepare a
speech.

Part 2: Vocabulary, Chapter Concepts, Lectures and Notes (Multiple choice, true/false, list,

Chapter 6: Critical Thinking and Reasoning

Inductive and Deductive Reasoning- be able to identify both approaches and give examples
Logical Fallacies- be able to identify examples of the various types of logical fallacies outlined
in this chapter

Chapter 10: Using Language Well

Know the 6 Cs of Language Use (Notes/handout given in class)

o Understand abstract vs. concrete language and be able to identify examples of
each

Chapter 13: Visual Aids

Understand design strategies outlined in the chapter and in class. Know how to use visual
aids effectively, and know specific terms associated with aesthetic design.

Know propositions of fact, value, and policy

Know how to appeal to different types of audiences
Understand ethos, pathos, logos. Give examples of how a speaker could execute these
strategies well. Be able to identify them in a speech.
