Instructional Procedures:
Prime Activities (Day 1)
To start, the teacher will hand out a survey to the students to assess the students prior
knowledge on and frequency of use with technology such as digital cameras, computers, and
photo-editing sites such as Befunky. After collecting the survey, the teacher should place the
students into groups based on their answers to the survey. Students with adequate prior
knowledge of these subjects should be paired with students who have less than adequate

knowledge on these subjects in order to facilitate student learning and adapt a useful
learning community within the different groups of children.
After the groups are assigned, the teacher will pass out a handout in which she shows
pictures that have been edited using photo-editing websites. The teacher will ask questions
about the pictures such as How do you think this was done? to facilitate conversation
about the topic. The teacher should also ask questions such as How many of you use the
internet? to give a subtle reminder to students that they are relatively familiar with some
aspects of the technology used to create such amazing edited photos. The teacher should
emphasize this in order to facilitate student learning; pointing out that the students can use
their prior knowledge about technology can help them succeed at this project and should
help increase their confidence in being able to use a completely new webpage.
The teacher should then speak about digital etiquette. The teacher should explain what
digital etiquette is to his/her students and then should emphasize the fact that this project
shall be done in good nature. Since the students will be taking photos of each other the
teacher should tell the students to refrain from editing a photo in a way that would be
deemed inappropriate or offensive. The teacher will then explain the project summary to the
students.
After explaining the project summary to the learners, the teacher will then introduce the
students to the digital camera they will be using for this project. The teacher will be sure to
point out how to turn on the camera and how to take pictures with it. The teacher will have
the students pose for a class photo and then the teacher will upload the picture onto his/her
computer using a USB to micro-USB cable that extends from the camera to the computer.
The picture will be saved under the Picture file in My Computer. Using a projector that is
hooked up to the teachers computer, the teacher will show his/her students how to open
the website
www.Befunky.com
and will demonstrate how to upload his/her picture from the
Pictures file on her computer to the website. The teacher will then briefly demonstrate
how to use the Effects portion of the Befunky photo-editing website using the class photo.
When the teacher is done editing, she will then print the photo and post it on the wall of
his/her classroom.

Develop Activities (Day 2)

Each student will be given a digital camera and will be asked to sit with their groups. The
teacher will ask each student to turn on their cameras. After making sure each student has
their camera turned on, the teacher should have the students practice taking pictures within
the constraints of the classroom. The students should be able to express their individual
creativity during this portion of the development activity. The students should be given about

a half hour to collect a variety of photos. The teacher will then ask the students to pick out
their favorite picture that they captured.
Once all the students have selected a picture, the students will be taken down to the
computer lab. The teacher will demonstrate again how to upload the picture from their
digital camera to the computer using a USB to micro-USB cable that extends from the camera
to the computer. The file should be saved to the Pictures folder within the My Computer
tab. The teacher should walk around the computer lab and help those students that are
struggling. When all students have completed this part of the activity, the teacher will then
instruct the students to access the internet and go to the webpage
www.Befunky.com
. The
teacher should write this on the board to avoid misspelling by the students. When the
students are all on the Befunky webpage, the teacher will give the students a handout
explaining a step-by-step procedure on how to upload their pictures from the computer to
the website and instruct them to follow the directions. The teacher should remind them of
how they watched her do this process the day before. The teacher should also walk around
the computer lab once again helping the students that are struggling. When each student has
their picture uploaded to the site, the teacher will then have each student click on the
paintbrush icon in the gray column on the left-hand side of the page. This will open the
Effects portion of Befunky in which this lesson is centered around. The teacher should then
explain how to use this portion of the website emphasizing how to change from one effect to
another, how to change the details of the effect by dragging the gray dot along the lines that
appear in a box to the right of the Effects box after choosing an effect, and how to apply or
cancel an effect. As the teacher shows the students these features, she should have them
follow along by giving click-by-click instructions on how to use these aspects of the site. The
teacher should make sure each student understands each step of the process before moving
on to the next step. After completing the instruction, the teacher should prompt the students
to continue editing their photos on their own using only the Effects portion of the Befunky
website. Students should then be instructed to save their pictures by clicking the Save
button at the top of the webpage, and then click the computer icon in order to save the
picture to the computer. The students can then open the files and print the picture to show
to the other members of their group and to bring home if they wish.

Practice Activity (Day 3)

Each group will be assigned to do a project in which the students will take pictures of each
other on the playground. The students can take pictures of themselves or of the other people
in their group. The students will then show their pictures to the other members of their
group. The group must then pick one picture to edit into their own original artwork using the
Effects portion of the Befunky photo-editing website. The teacher will advocate team work
from the beginning to the end of this activity. The teacher should stress the importance of

working together and supporting each others ideas during this activity. The teams will then
be taken to the computer lab in order to edit their pictures using the Befunky photo-editing
website. Teams should be able to upload pictures from their camera to the computer and
then upload the picture to Befunky without any assistance. Each team will then be given an
hour to edit their photos using the different effects on Befunky. The teacher should
emphasize the fact that the first effect that they choose might not be the best effect. This
should prompt students to realize that experimentation and revision is important when
creating an original artwork. After an hour, the groups will finish editing, save the file to their
computer in the Picture folder in My Computer and then from there will be instructed on
how to print their pictures. Each group will turn in a picture to their teacher to complete the
assignment.

Digital Citizenship
Digital Etiquette is the one of the nine themes of Digital Citizenship that can be incorporated
into this lesson. In a day and age where so many pictures and videos are being taken of
people with or without their knowledge, it is necessary to emphasize to the students the
importance of not editing pictures in a way that might be offensive to or make other students
feel uncomfortable. Digital etiquette stresses the fact that students should respect each
other while using digital applications in the same way they would in face-to-face interactions.
This theme is incorporated within this lesson by giving the students an introduction to the
meaning of digital etiquette and by allowing them to create an original artwork in an
environment in which digital etiquette is extremely important in order to not hurt the
feelings of their group members while editing pictures of them. The groups were only
allowed to take pictures of students within their groups in order to emphasize this theme.
The students would have to work with each other in a respectful manner in order to
complete the project without any problems or arguments arising. The teacher should be able
to assess the students understanding of digital etiquette by carefully watching the activity
within the groups and by evaluating if the groups considered the theme of digital etiquette
while editing their submitted picture.

Extensions, Differentiations, and Adaptations

All students within the groups should finish this assignment at the same time since the
students will be collaborating with their teammates. Each student should be working within a
group and cannot work individually.
The teacher will place students that have little to no prior knowledge in a group with
students who have adequate prior knowledge in order to facilitate a useful learning
community environment for the struggling learner. The teacher will also provide any students
who are struggling with one-on-one time in order to figure out what the individual needs of
the child are and address each issue independently. The teacher should sit with the student
and actively show them how to complete the steps of the activity in which the child is
confused about. The teacher should first demonstrate and then ask the student to complete
the step themselves.
If any group is not done editing after an hour into the activity, the teacher should allow an
additional fifteen minutes. The teacher should prompt the groups that are finished to help
the groups that are not.

Assessments
Formative Assessments:
Students will engage in a discussion about photo-editing at the Prime Activites part of this
lesson plan about photo-editing. The students will look at edited photos and be asked
questions such as:
1) How do you think this photo was made?
2) Have any of you used a photo-editor before?
3) Have any of you used the Befunky photo-editing website before?
During the teachers presentation of how to upload pictures and use the effects manager on
Befunky using the class photo the teacher could ask questions to assess learning such as:
1) What object do I need in order to upload the picture from the camera to the
computer?
2) What was the name of the website again?
3) What color is the button I clicked on in order to upload a picture from the computer
to the website?

4) What color is the button I clicked on that saves my edited photo to the computer?
5) What side of the computer is the paintbrush emblem on that opens up the Effects
section that I used?
During the Develop Activity the instructor could ask to assess student learning the following
questions:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
8)

Do all of you remember how to upload pictures from the camera to the computer?
How do you get to the Effects part of Befunky?
What kind of website is Befunky and what does it do?
How do you apply an effect?
How do you cancel an effect?
What button do you press to save your picture?
What file should you save your picture in?
Do you remember how to print your picture?

Before the Practice Activity, the students should be given a quiz related to questions asked
during the Develop Activity. The quiz will not be graded but will be used to assess each Indi
dual students progress in learning the material and better help the teacher decide if a review
activity is necessary before letting the students begin their group project.
Summative Assessments:
There will be one assessment of the students learning which will include two parts. The first
part will be the turning in of an edited photo to the teacher by each group at the end of day
three. The picture should be successfully edited using the effects portion of the Befunky
photo-editing website and should be turned in on time. This portion of the summative
assessment is a way of assessing objectives one through five by evaluating the success of
each group in editing the picture in an effective and timely manner.
The second part of the final assessment will be a written essay portion that will be completed
in the classroom after the group activity is over. The written essay portion of this assessment
will ask the students to reply to questions such as:
1) Do you feel your team worked together well?
2) How did you contribute to the team?
3) Do you feel that you and your teammates were creative during this project? If yes,
how so?
This part of the summative assessment will address objectives one, five, and six.
