Module 5 Flipped Classroom and ePortfolios

Drawing a Self Portrait using Facial Proportions
Students will create a self-portrait drawing using facial proportion measurements.

Target Population
5th Grade
Population Characteristics
This lesson could be administered in a classroom with varied levels of technology access. As technology
is necessary for viewing flipped lesson at home, it is not a requirement that students have access in the
classroom.

Curriculum Links
The students are creating meaningful connections across the disciplines. Integrating math and art give
the students real world applications for mathematical concepts and allows them to apply their
understanding in a visual representation.
Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1.A
Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material; explicitly draw on that
preparation and other information known about the topic to explore ideas under discussion.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2.C
Link ideas within and across categories of information using words, phrases, and clauses (e.g., in
contrast, especially).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.2.D
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.8
Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from print and digital
sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished work, and provide a list of sources.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.B.7.B
Interpret division of a whole number by a unit fraction, and compute such quotients.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.MD.B.2
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use
operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots.
NYS State Standards for the Visual Art Grade 5 (intermediate)
1.4.1. Students produce a collection of art works, in a variety of mediums, based on a range of individual
and collective experiences.
3.4.2. Students identify, analyze, and interpret the visual and sensory characteristics that they discover
in natural and human-made forms.
3.4.3. Students compare the ways ideas and concepts are communicated through visual art with the
various ways that those ideas and concepts are manifested in other art forms.
3.4.4. Students compare the ways ideas, themes, and concepts are communicated through the visual
arts in other disciplines, and the various ways that those ideas, themes, and concepts are manifested
within the discipline.

Objectives
Students will be able to participate in lesson instruction by viewing a flipped lesson video.
Students will be able to recall important measurements of facial proportions.
Students will be able to compare use of facial proportions to dividing whole numbers into fractions.
Students will be able to apply facial proportion measurements to draw a self portrait.
Students will be able to plot measurements on the head in the appropriate locations using fractional
measurements.
Students will be able to define the facial features on a human head.
Students will be able to add hair and details to create their likeness in their artwork.

ISTE Student Standards

1a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
1b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression

1c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
4c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions

Materials/Timing
Students will need access to computers or iPads at home. Prior to beginning this lesson, students will
complete a short 5-10 minute self portrait sketch assessing their pre-instructional skills. Sketches will be
saved for the final assessment of the lesson (this can happen in class for control purposes). The face to
face lesson will take place over two 40 minute work sessions but will include at least 20-30 minutes of
out of class time for viewing the flipped video and completing a sample facial proportion worksheet as
homework. Students will complete assigned tasks at home that are necessary prior to the completion of
the in-class drawing activity before face to face activity can take place.

Scope and Sequence

Day 1
Students will review facial proportions and the fractional measurements used to draw a human face.
Students will discuss their reactions to the video and to the task of completing a practice portrait at
home. Students will each be given a sheet of 12x18 final drawing paper. Students will do a follow a long
drawing with the instructor. Class time will primarily be spent drawing with emphasis being placed on
giving detail to the features. Students will work through issues with measurement and proportions as
they move through the steps of the drawing. Students will be able to complete a full portrait; head,
eyes, nose, mouth, ears, neck, and shoulders in class with extra time for practice and problem solving.
Students will submit their facial proportion practice sheets to the teacher for review, and for feedback.

Day 2
Student facial proportion practice sheets will be passed back for students to review teacher feedback.
The whole class will discuss their thoughts, before moving on to todays task. Students will discuss the
hair demonstration from the flipped video and will compare different hair styles of students in the
classroom. Different examples will be modeled and students will be able to complete their portraits by
adding hair, glasses, freckles, and other important details to their self portrait drawings.

Supplemental Materials
Students each receive a copy of a Facial Proportion Practice Worksheet to complete at home after
watching the Flipped Video Lesson Capture. Students must receive the worksheet before watching the
video and must watch the video and complete the worksheet outside of class, prior to day one of the
lesson activities. In class students will have access to hand mirrors, use of an interactive white board,
teacher models, and their completed practice sheets.

Student Evaluation
Students will be graded on a 1-4 grading system *See Rubric*
1 Well Below Standard
2 Slightly Below Standard
3 Meets Standard
4 Exceeds Standard

Lesson Evaluation
This lesson will be deemed successful if students meet standard and are able to recall information
translated through the flipped lesson and apply the learning to their drawings. The original portrait
drawing pre-instruction, can be compared to their Facial Proportion Practice worksheets and final
drawings as a pre-test/post-test comparison for growth.
