AMERICAN DEMOCRACY AND FOREIGN POLICY

The essence of American democracy is like a pendulum that keeps on swinging its weight to certain
directions but never unlocks from the centerpiece. The American ideals of liberty, justice and
capitalism proscribes the politics in Washington that redounds in all 50 states, and to a practical
degree in the context of U.S. foreign policy. The international policy differences between the
Democrats and Republicans is at most obscure. The Republian majority in U.S. Congress may
change the tone, but the State Department will likely keep its course. The U.S. Pacific fleet will sail in
line with the established strategic vision. America will relate to the Philippines and the world from the
perspective of its national and global interests with pragmatic reference to its ideals. The flexion point
will be up to reasonable influence of domestic countervailing interests. The potency of the FilipinoAmerican influence in the U.S. political mainstream is yet to unfold, perhaps in the league of the
Jewish lobby. The new generation of Filipino-American leaders who view themselves as colorless,
non-tribal and progressive will surely make their mark in the coming decades.
