Description of Lesson:
Students will be given a pre-set criteria and asked to compose a piece
following the criteria given to them within 15-20 minutes. While students
work, I will circulate to check work, monitor progress, and offer assistance
when needed. When students have completed their composition, they will be
asked to play them individually for the class.

The student will improvise, compose, and arrange music within
specified guidelines.

MG7-1.4 Student will play instrument, alone and in a varitety of
ensembles, using proper technique and appropriate posture
MG7-1.5 Use notation and aural perception to create and play simple
melodies and accompaniments on classroom instruments and available
electronic devices
Composing and Arranging:
MG7-2.5 Demonstrate creativity by composing short pieces including
basic music elements using manuscript paper.
MG7-2.7 Compose and arrange simple pieces using the expressive
elements of music (tempo, harmony, texture, timbre, articulation, and
dynamics).

Cross Curricular Connections:


Math: Students use basic math to ensure that they have the correct number
of beats per measure.
Instructional Objective(s) Criteria:

Students will follow pre-set criteria to compose and play an original melody with
little to no errors.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Informal discussions.
Oral questions posed to whole class or individuals.

Grade papers based on accuracy of rhythm, meeting of all criteria, and correct
notation of all symbols.

Materials/Resources:

Blank manuscript paper and pencils.

Their own instruments or a school provided instrument.


Optional: Music notation software and computer; variety of instruments to perform
melodies.

Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge):


Student will need prior knowledge on how to play, and write the D-scale.
Student will need prior knowledge on basic rhythms, 4/4 time signature,
dynamics, etc.

Procedures:
Teacher writes the following assignment on the board.

Write a four-measure melody


Write your clef and a 4/4 time signature
Use whole, half, dotted half, and quarter notes and rest.
Choose from the following pitches: D, E, F#, G, A, B, C#.
End the piece on D.

While students work, Teacher circulates to check work, and monitor


progress. When a student has a melody that is noted correctly, either
have to student play it on their instrument or play it for them.
Accommodations:
Students that finish early will quietly practice their piece either in a practice
room, if available, or in their seat.
