INTEGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA RESOURCES

Introduction
Technology and media resources allow teachers and students with more opportunities to
interact with content then could previously be achieved due to time and travel restraints. It is
important to be able to wisely integrate technology and media resources into the classroom to
facilitate student learning. Technology and media resources should open doors for students to
interact with the content.
Rationale
Two artifacts that demonstrate how I have integrated technology and media resources
into the classroom are a Power Point (Artifact A) that allows students to interact with the features
of the Ocean Floor and a lesson plan (Artifact B) I created where students were students used a
website to practice their math skills. I chose the Power Point because it shows how I used
technology to allow students to visualize geographical features of the globe that they could not
otherwise see. I used the Internet to find depictions of the ocean floor and selected several
pictures that highlighted different features so the students could have a well-rounded
understanding of the ocean floor. At the end of the Power Point I showed the students of a digital
depiction of the Earth without water so they could see what all the features put together. While
the pictures allowed them gain an understanding of each feature, the video allowed them to see
these features together forming the oceans. The students gained a deeper understanding of the
topic through the use of technology.
Artifact B is my lesson plan on equivalent equations. I opened this lesson with a video on
different math properties. After the video I introduced the associative property that a teacher
created with his class. The students then practiced the concept using Pans Balance, a website
where students create equivalent equations. The website has a balance scale and students enter a

math sentence on one side and then have to create another math sentence on the other side that is
equivalent. The website then notifies the student if the equations are equivalent or not. I chose
this lesson plan because it shows how I am able to use media resources such as class-made
videos and Internet activities to allow students a chance to interact with the math concepts they
learned in the lesson. The video allowed students to hear the math properties set to a song. The
activity on the Internet allowed students to visualize the equality of different math sentences. It
also allowed the students a chance to manipulate numbers and experience the concept.
Reflection
Technology in the 21st classroom extends beyond simply teaching students how to use
different types of technology, but using it to engage them in meaningful learning experiences
(Elliott, 2011). Most of the students who enter the classroom today know how to operate digital
technology, the teachers role in using technology in the classroom is not only incorporating it
instruction but allowing students to use and develop skills in using digital technology to enhance
their own learning (Blair, 2012). Technology can also open doors for the students to experience
things that they might not otherwise be able to see or hear. This can allow them to make connects
that would be more difficult without the tools digital technology.
The science Power Point and the video allowed the students to make connections with
information that otherwise they would only be able to gain through text and diagrams. Bringing
videos and pictures available on the internet shows students that there are many resources that
they might not have access to earlier. While students have exposure to technology outside of the
classroom, they need to understand that there is more to it that social websites. Using technology
in whole group supplements the use of technology in small groups and in individual projects.
Students need to experience technology in all areas of their learning.

I enjoyed finding media resources to allow students to experience the content in a

different way. Another aspect of technology in the classroom I plan to use is having the students
create their own presentations and videos based on models we use in the classroom. As they see
technology used to present content they will gain a deeper understanding of how to use it on their
own which they can develop in the classroom with independent practice.
