Callout
Do you like getting dirty?
Are you interested in the
different components of
soil? If so, the Northern FFA
Soils Judging Team is for
you! You do not have to
have taken the Agronomy
class to compete.
What is Soils
Judging?
There are three different
practicums for the soils
judging contest. The first
is slope. Using skills taught
in class and at practice,
students will measure the
slope of the land. Next,
there are a series of five
soil pits that the students
will use to judge the soil
based on color, shape,
drainage, and other requirements taught during practice. Students
will be expected to get
into the pits to judge the
soil. In addition to the
judging, students will do
a simple mathematic
equation to determine
the amount of residue a
farmer should leave on
his field to prevent erosion.
