President Obama Delivers the State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C- On February 12, 2013, President Barack Obama delivered the State of the
Union address to the citizens of the United States of America to begin his second term as
commander-in-chief. He spoke with a sense of urgency and dedication to pick the nation up off
the ground and support its comeback.
To begin, Obama informed the citizens of how the deficit has been reduced by more than
$2.5 trillion. Obama goes on to discuss how Congress passed a law in 2011 stating that if both
parties could not agree on a deficit goal, extreme cuts to military, education, energy, and medical
research would occur and both parties decided that that was a bad idea.
Obama then turned his focus to the aging population of America, and the increasing costs
to provide reliable and affordable healthcare for them. He informed the nation that the Affordable
Care Act is already aiding in bringing health care costs down significantly.
Obama addressed the need for more jobs in America and he proposed that manufacturing
hubs are the way to do it. With 15 hubs set up across the country, millions of new jobs will be
generated. He talked about how energy efficient America is becoming, how cars have doubled
the distance that they go on a gallon of gas and how more natural gas has been produced by the
United States than ever before. Obama stated that he is urging his Cabinet to come up with more
sustainable resources of energy and to make the switch over to solar energy because of its cost
effectiveness. He recommended that an Energy Security trust could shift cars and trucks off of oil
forever. He said a new goal for America should be to see the amount of energy used by the
typical household be cut in half in 20 years.
To strengthen the minds and lives of the youngest citizens of the United States, the
President encouraged the nation to provide more affordable preschool programs and to get
children involved in these programs. President Obama goes on to discuss better schooling for the
children of America that involves everyone graduating high school with a degree in some area of
focus so that they are ready to work right out of high school if need be.

He argues that in addition to high schools continuously working to churn out better graduates,
colleges, over the past few years, have become more affordable for those said graduates to
attend. The President wants that affordability to continue by changing the Higher Education Act
so that colleges receive certain types of federal aid.
Obama encouraged Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform so that the
border can remain strong and committed to only allowing immigrants across the border that are
prepared to work hard and that have taken the necessary measures to become a legal immigrant
into the United States.
Over 33,000 men and women have already returned from fighting overseas for our
countrys liberties and freedoms and Obama ensured that they would continue to come back to
their homes over the next few years. He talked about strengthening the defenses of the military
and putting up cyber defenses so that terrorism to our actual and virtual selves could not be a
possibility.
America must remain a beacon to all who seek freedom during this period of historic
change, Obama said.
The President ended his State of the Union address by giving examples of citizens
exercising their rights as citizens of the United States of America.
It remains the task of us all, as citizens of these United States, to be the authors of the
next great chapter of our American story, Obama said.
