PROFILE

I will be a junior at Niles North High School who wants to do independent research on a topic in mathematics or computer science for
the 2015-2016 school year. I have taken a research class at Niles North, SIRS, which has taught me the steps of the scientific process
and guided me along it to finish my own project.
EXPERIENCE
SIRS STUDENT,NILES NORTH HIGH SCHOOL; SKOKIE, IL 2014-2015

The STEM investigation and research class at Niles North high school is a year round class that focuses on an independent
research project. I did research on the effects a drag reduction device could have on the performance of a school bus. I
obtained the dimensions of a standard size school bus, made a 3D model of it using inventor as well as 3D models of different
proposed drag reduction devices. I ran multiple scenarios in simulation CFD to analyze the drag and airflow on the bus in each
case and optimized the designs. A cost analysis was done in the end and it was found that one device, the back plates, could
be economically viable under my model. We entered our projects into the IJAS regional science fair in March.
INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, NILES NORTH HIGH SCHOOL; SKOKIE, IL 2013-2014

As part of the honors biology class, we conducted an independent research project. I created a model of cholera transmission
using NetLogo and investigated the effects of vaccination on the spread of a cholera outbreak. We entered our projects into the IJAS
fair last year too.

AUTODESK INVENTOR

I can create 3D models of objects in Autodesk Inventor given the dimensions or the object.
AUTODESK SIMULATION CFD

I can use the Autodesk Simulation CFD to conduct fluid dynamics simulations for external and internal flow and use the tools it provides
to
LOGGERPRO

I can use the LoggerPro software with a variety of sensors to make graphs and tables and analyze the data gathered from it.
DATA ANALYSIS

I can create graphical displays or tabular displays of data from an experiment and perform basic statistical procedures such as a linear
regression, z-tests, t-tests, chi squared tests. I use Google docs for basic graphs and excel for more in depth analysis.
ENGINEERING PROCESS AND SCIENTIFIC METHOD

I have learned the steps of conducting a experiment using the scientific method or using the design process for an engineering type
investigation. I can use the steps appropriately to approach a research question, design and conduct an experiment to test it, and
analyze the data and draw conclusions from it. I can write a paper to present my findings to others and make a presentation on it.
