Key Questions:
What is the focus question for this lesson? What are some related questions?
Which First Nations groups originally inhabited each region of Alberta?
What are the 6 regions of Alberta? (review)

What are some main characteristics of each region (review)?

What clues from your pictures can help you figure out which region they are from?
What is the landscape like?
What plant life is visible?
What is the climate like? (snow, wet, dry?)
What animal life is visible?
Materials:
Puzzle pieces
Printed pictures
Lesson #3 smartboard file
Student Journals
6 Student Group Worksheets
Group #1-6 signs
Student textbooks
Popsicle stick names
Preparation:
- photocopy 6 student worksheets (question sheets for group activity)
Adaptations:
give groups assistance if they are having trouble finding the
clues to find which region the pictures are from
provide them with more detailed guiding questions or clues

Lesson Procedure:
(Use numbered or bulleted steps. Indicate lesson introduction, development and
conclusion if that helps clarify the flow of the lesson. Write it with enough detail that a
substitute teacher could teach the lesson.)
1. Have students seated in front of the smartboard
2. Tell them we will be learning where some of the different groups of First Nations
lived in the regions
3. Review what the six regions of Alberta are. Choose a popsicle stick ask that
student to name one region. Do this for all six regions
4. Go to the link Zoom in on Alberta on the smartboard. For review, click on each
region to remind students where it is and what it looks like. Read off a few
characteristics to remind students what they are
5. Explain to students that we will be doing an activity for them to figure out which
First Nations groups used to live in each region of Alberta. Explain that you will
be handing pictures out to each group and they need to examine the following
questions on a worksheet what the landscape is like, plant life, climate and
animal life. Their task is to find clues from the pictures and they can use their

textbook to find which region their pictures are from. They need to work together
as a group to fill out one worksheet.
6. Ask random students questions What are you supposed to do in your group
is the person that is writing the worksheet the only one working?
7. Tell students that they will be getting into 6 groups. Hand each student a puzzle
piece from the bucket. Have group signs and textbooks ready at each group spot.
Group 1 yellow puzzle pieces point to where they are and ask group 1 to go to
their spots quietly.
Group 2- black puzzle pieces
Group 3 orange puzzle pieces
Group 4 red puzzle pieces
Group 5 blue puzzle pieces
Group 6 green and white puzzle pieces
8. Hand each group pictures with the same background color and the worksheet.
9. Walk around to each group and provide guidance and ask leading questions if they
need help.
10. Give groups around 10 minutes then come together as a class and let each group
tell the class what they used from the pictures they had to decide the region they
were from. Put pictures up on the smart board so all students can see them. Ensure
that students understand the links between each picture and the region.
11. Ask students to get out their student anthropology journals and fill in page 4, as
they discover as a class which First Nations groups lived in each region

Assessment:
How will you know if students met your lesson objectives? What are you looking for in
this formative assessment?
Formative assessment/pre-assessment questions addressed to whole class at the
beginning to see what students remember about Albertas regions
Formative assessment group picture activity & worksheet to see if students can make
connections between the clues on the photograph and link them to the characteristics of
regions
Formative assessment completion of page 5 in their student journals. To see if students
understand and can recognize which Frist Nations groups lived in each of the regions
Lesson Reflection:
This is a space for notes after youve taught the lesson.
