A Midsummer Passion

The heart. A complicated organ, the human heart is considered the center of
emotion, most commonly for love. Stimulated for the reason of love, its usually young
adolescents who are depicted experimenting with this phenomenal organ. From the mind
of beloved renaissance author, William Shakespeare,
A Midsummer Nights Dream
is a
story that depicts heart intertwined teenagers, driven by this love. I firmly feel that
love, by definition, based on the story, means, to sacrifice oneself for their beloved one,
determination just to secure a relationship, and it plays as the foundation of life
occurrences.
Love means sacrifice. Particularly for the opposite partner, people infatuated will
usually be willing to suffer for that person. This is evident when, in
A Midsummer Nights
Dream
, Lysander plans:
Therefore, hear me, Hermia:
I have a widow aunt, a dowager
Of great revenue, and she hath no child.
From Athens is her house remote seven leagues,
And she respects me as her only son.
There, gentle Hermia, may I marry thee;
And to that place the sharp Athenian law
Cannot pursue us. If thou lovest me, then
Steal forth thy fathers house tomorrow night (1.1.158-66).
To clarify, Lysander considers eloping with Hermia, for Athenian law forbids their
relationship. This shows that hes willing to leave everything, including his home, behind
for her; risking getting caught and punished. It shows that he doesnt mind doing
precarious tasks just to have the chance to be with her; hes willing to make a sacrifice
for her. This dedication is very admirable, and illustrates how caring and devoted
Lysander is to Hermia. It indicates how, with great love, comes great care, and with
great care, comes great passion; passion in which translates into determined love.
Love also foreshadows hard work, for being with someone isnt always as simple
and quick as a dream. This can be proven when, Egeus states:
Full of vexation come I, with complaint
Against my child, my daughter Hermia.
Stand forth, Demetrius.My noble lord,
This man hath my consent to marry her.
Stand forth, Lysander. And, my gracious duke,
This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child.
Thou, thou, Lysander, thou hast given her rhymes
And interchanged love tokens with my child.
Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung
With feigning voice verses of feigning love
And stoln the impression of her fantasy
(1.1.23-33).

This depicts how Egeus, Hermias father, prefers that Hermia marry Demetrius, even
though Lysander has already won her heart. This shows how Hermia must convince her
father before she could be with Lysander. And by Egeus tone, he is quite finalized on his
decision of choosing Demetrius for Hermia to wed. Therefore rendering the amount of
effort required of Hermia to change her fathers mind much greater. If there was no
conflict, and everything went smoothly, Egeus wouldve let Hermia be with Lysander, and
everything wouldve been smoothly settled. However, this isnt the case. Love, just like
everything else in life, doesnt come easily.
Love plays an infrastructural role in life. Without love, much of life wouldnt be as
interesting, and there wouldnt be as much occurrences. An example of this is when,
Puck, or, Robin Goodfellow states, as he applies a magic love nectar to Demetrius eyes,
to make him fall in love with Helena, Lord, what fools these mortals be! (3.2.117). Puck
is a mystical creature, who, in the quote, looks down upon mortals, or, the humans in the
story. But, what isnt clear is that without the love conflict in the story between the
lovers Puck is having problems with, there wouldnt be a story. To elaborate further, in
the story, the main conflicts foundation is rested upon the hearts of the lovers of the
story. But without this love, there wouldnt be a conflict. And without a conflict, there
wouldnt be a story. Without love, Puck wouldnt have stated what he did in the quote
above. Overall, loves significance in life is taken for granted, and should be appreciated
for being integrated in, and adding interest to, our daily lives.
I strongly believe that love, implies relinquishment, perseverance, and plays a major role
in life events. Based on all that is mentioned above, to love, or not to love,
that
is the
question.
