Part 2 | Collaboratively with your colleagues, develop an integrated learning experience

(education, non-education, or with adults). FOR K-12 ONLY Literacy must be a part of the
integrated learning experience.
Curriculum Objectives or Professional Learning Standards (for non-education or adults)
Science:
Bio.2.1 Analyze the interdependence of living organisms within their environments.
Bio.2.1.1 Analyze the flow of energy and cycling of matter (water, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen)
through ecosystems relating the significance of each to maintaining the health and sustainability of
an ecosystem.
Bio.2.1.3 Explain various ways organisms interact with each other (including predation,
competition, parasitism, mutualism) and with their environments resulting in stability within
ecosystems.
Bio.2.2 Understand the impact of human activities on the environment (one generation affects the
next).
Math:
6.RP.1 Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship
between two quantities.
6.RP.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b != 0, and use rate
language in the context of a ratio relationship.
6.RP.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by
reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or
equations.
a. Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements,
find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to
compare ratios.
b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed.
Literacy:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.1
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn
from the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details;
provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.3
Describe how a particular story's or drama's plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the
characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution
Social Studies:
6.H.2.3 -Explain how innovation and/or technology transformed civilizations , societies and regions
over time (e.g agricultural technology, weaponry, transportation, and communication).
6.H.1.1-Construction charts, graphs, and historical narratives to explain particular events or issues
over time.

Learning Activities
Science:
Students will explore and analyze the ecosystem within caves that are similar to the one
described in Tom Sawyer. Based on this information students will explain how long they think they
could survive lost in a cave.
Students will research a cave ecosystem using the app Howstuffworks as well as
other internet resources they find on their own
Students will analyze the different parts of the ecosystem in a cave to show what the
effect of humans would have on the environment and if they could survive within that
ecosystem
Students will work together in groups of 3-4 to create a Grid presentation that explains
what their opinion based on the facts they have learned with pictures, examples (locations of
caves, and facts.
Math:
A scenario of a riverboat and a raft moving along the Mississippi will be presented. Students will
examine how ropes with marks of knots was used to measure the depth of the river and explore
how different fractions of distances between marks relates to different fractions of fathoms of water
depth and how this equates to a number of feet. They will also examine how the change in position
over time results in a unit rate and compare this to a unit rate obtained by using a gps app to find
their own speed using any method of motion they choose (ie walking, bicycling, driving)
.
Social Studies:
Students will research (Kid Rex-safe search engine for kids) about how the Mississippi River
contributed to the development of Missouri (setting of the book) and western states in America.
Create a graphic organizer in the Popplet app and explain how transportation and communication
shaped the western region of the United States because of the Mississippi River. Text and images
should be included on every box of the graphic organizer.
Literacy:
Students will explore the text Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain by participating online in a virtual book
club. After reading sections of the book they will complete teacher assigned quizzes and actively
analyze and discuss various topics of the book utilizing the Edmodo app. Quizzes will be a
combination of multiple choice and short answer that will be graded by the teacher who will also
give feedback online. Students will participate in forums posted by the teacher for discussion.
Students will be required to submit their own original response to the topic as well as replying to at
least two other students posts by using textual evidence to support their opinions.

Integration of App/Tool
Social Studies:
Working individually, students will learn about the history and transportation/communication of the
Mississippi river. Each student should create a graphic organizer about the Mississippi river and
email the finished organizer in PDF or JPEG (picture) to teacher and one classmate.
Student Collaboration
Students will collaborate with a classmate by comparing/contrasting their Popplet graphic organizer

to a classmates Popplet. This will allow for informal assessment and accountability for both
students.
ISTE NETS-T or other Professional Standards
Assessment of Learning
Social Studies: Assessment of learning will be determined through emailed Popplet graphic
organizer to teacher. The teacher will use a rubric to determine the quality of work on the Popplet.
Rubric is located on http://popplerubric.weebly.com

Apps to be used and Demonstrations

App One: Howstuffworks (Science)
Description of App:
Howstuffworks is a free app that is similar to a multimedia version of an encyclopedia. It provides
the user with access to articles, videos, shows, and quizzes on a variety of topics. The articles and
quizzes come directly from HSW and the videos are ones archived from the Discovery Channel. An

easy to use design makes it easy to search and find information on a desired topic. HSW also has
access to a number of podcasts that you can listen to while you browse articles and blog posts.

Benefits of App
40,000+ articles, 12,000+ videos, 2,000+ shows, 1,000+ quizzes
Share facts on Twitter, Facebook and email
Easy navigation
Access to blogs
Multi-platform use
Free!
Constraints of App
Not always a useful article or video on desired content
No advanced search option to look for only articles or videos
Internet connection needed
Mostly Science related topics

Watch reputable videos
Take quiz to check knowledge
Teacher USE
Easy way for teachers to have students do research
Assign quizzes
Create a webquest (or Howstuffworks-quest) to direct student searching
App two: Edmodo (Literacy: Book Club)
Description of App
Edmodo is an educational app that draws inspiration from social networking sites to create a safe
environment for students to learn from their teachers and fellow classmates. Students create a
profile and become part of their online classroom set up by their teacher. The teacher can post
assignments directly from Edmodo or simply post a link to other assignments. Students are able to
take quizzes and respond to posts set up for them. Its a great way to get students to get more
involved in their learning.
