PREFACE

We at the General Directorate of Statistics at the Central


Informatics Organization (CIO) has the Pleasure to introduce
our 25th publication of the booklet Bahrain-in-Figures that
includes four years of information (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008).
This document publication aims to Provide precise statistical
information and details about the Kingdom of Bahrain to
interested individual persons or companies, researchers, Officials
and decisionmakers in various government and international
organizations inside and outside the Kingdom of Bahrain.
This booklet contains the most recent official summarized
information about all economic, social and industrial sectors in
the Kingdom; it also includes demographic information about
the Bahraini residents in addition to comparative statistical
information between the Kingdom and the other GCC States.
The Genaral Directorate of Statistics looks upon the publication
of this booklet to provide accurate statistical Information and
make it readily available to the public to benefit thereof. For more
detailed information about the Kingdom of Bahrain, the public
is invited to visit the electronic library for the CIOs web site at
www.cio.gov.bh.
The official website provides the opportunity to surf the site in

Bahrain s National Day is December 1617, and it gained its indepence in 1971.
The kingdom of Bahrain comprises 5
governorates: Al-Muharraq, Capital,
Northern, Central, and Southern.

Bahrains total area size is 757,50 Sq. Km
for 2008.

Location
Bahrain lies in the middle of the Arabian
Gulf, near the east coast of the kingdom
of Saudi Arabia.

Weekends
Friday & Saturday are the official weekend
for all government offices, as well as
most companies and banks, except those
who work half a day on Thursday.

Climate
Bahrains climate is hot in summer
and mild in winter. Between November
and April the weather is cool with
an average temperature that ranges
from 15-24 C, The weather is coldest
between December and March when the
North winds pass over the country. The
average temperature between July and
September is 36 C with a high percentage
of humidity, while the average rainfall is
about 77 millimeters.

Religion
Islam is the official religion of the
Kingdom and is embraced by the vast
majority of the population. There are
also places of worship in Bahrain for
adherents of other religions.

Bahrain dinar is the official currency,
composed of units of 1000 fils. US$=378
