Competency 001 The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the

development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is


shared and supported by the school community.
This competency implies that the principal is the Vision Caster of the school. They
must take the best parts of a school and create a direction that will build on these and move the
school forward. There is a marketing element to this competency. The principal must create a
vison that is worthy of buy in where others will gladly work to achieve and further this vision. In
a school setting this vision should always be student driven and further the students within that
particular school. I would equate this competency to a potter who is molding clay into
something beautiful and worthwhile. Principals must also be great communicator to be able to
articulate this vision in a meaningful way. The principal acts as the steward of valuable
resources that will shape and model the future.

Competency 002 The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all
members of the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize
resources to promote student success.
Although the population within a school can be diverse, the principal is charged with
looking out for the interest of all parties. They have to be able to build consensus to continually
keep the momentum within a school moving forward. In order to keep the momentum going a
principal must be a master of consensus building skills. Having the ability to bring diverse
populations with varied interest together to keep them in line with the vision is always the focus.

Competency 003 The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical
and legal manner.
Within education there has always been a higher than average moral compass not found
in other professions. There has always been a high set of expectations which teachers have had
to adhere. As the leader within these settings, the bar is set even higher for a Principal as the
leader within the school. Principals must always act with integrity and ethics even when it is not
the popular thing to do.

Competency 004 The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of
curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of
curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied
assessments to measure student performance.
Although the principal is responsible for many things within the school building, the most
important perhaps is the instruction being provided in each and every classroom within their
building. Principals must constantly monitor instruction in a cyclical fashion. These would
include ensuring alignment of curriculum, instruction, resources, and assessment; and promoting
the use of varied instruments to measure student performance. The principal responsible for
guaranteeing student success through this aligned curriculum. There should be a constant focus
on a variety of data to address areas of need.

Competency 005 The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an
instructional program and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and
staff professional growth.
The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program and a
campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Through
participating in the Instructional Leadership Development, we have applied all aspects of
instructional leadership including the teacher observation process and assisting in making
recommendations for professional learning. We have learned about meeting the needs of the
individual students within classrooms. We have also learned about how to inject lessons with
higher order thinking while reach the differing modalities of learners.

Competency 006: The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and
development system to improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement
appropriate models for supervision and staff development, and apply the legal
requirements for personnel management.
Armed with an understanding of the current teacher appraisal instrument, principals must
gather data through walk-throughs and formal observations. This data must then be utilized to
develop a plan for influencing teacher growth. This teacher growth will ultimately result to

student success. Principals must earn trust and respect along with building relationships with
their teachers to be effective in this aspect of their job.

Competency 007: The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and
problem-solving skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
Principals are the preservers of the learning environment. They must be skilled
organizers, assertive decision-makers and astute problem solvers in order to look at situations
from all angles to gain the best environment for student learning to occur. They must encourage
and facilitate positive changes while continuing to monitor and evaluate the school environment
for additional needed adjustments which will further the learning of their students.

Competency 008 - The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and
management in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial
management, and technology use.
Principals must be knowledge regarding legalities of campus budgets including the different
types of budget areas and the rules for utilizing these different types of budgets. Overall this
competency addresses a principals ability to manage resources. These resources include human,
material, and financial resources.

Competency 009: The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership management
to the campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning
environment.
The principal serves as the guardian of their students and staff in the case of an
emergency. Emergencies may present themselves in many different ways such as weather, fire
and other disasters, violence, and health related issues. Principals must also take ownership of
training and preparing their staff for emergencies which can occur at any time. When these types
of events occur principals must remain the picture of calm as they aid teachers in removing
themselves and their students from harms way.
