Literacy Lesson Plan

Literacy Lesson Plan for Beginning Reader:
Eddie is a first grade student and English language learner. He falls into the beginner stage of reading
development based on various characteristics in reading, oral language, writing, and word study. Some of these
characteristics include having to read words and stories aloud, pronouncing multi-syllable words, and writing
legible words letter by letter and from left to right.

Diet:
Fluency
Learning Objectives:
Objective
The student will practice reading
aloud and rereading with leveled
G texts.

Standard of Learning
Reading 1.9 (i): Read and reread
familiar stories, poems, and
passages with fluency, accuracy,
and meaningful expression.

Assessment
Running record of the text with
the student reading aloud.

Materials needed: List all materials needed

o Leveled G book- Three Silly Monkeys Go Fishing by Helen Depree

Time for this part of lesson: What part of 30 minute lesson will be used for this part?
Fluency is the biggest part of the beginner diet. With 40% of the diet, this part of the 30 minute lesson will be
approximately 12 minutes.
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
These leveled G texts would be distributed to a small group of students that fall within, or close to, the same
reading level. The book would be introduced early in the week and students would have already taken the time
to complete a picture walk, learn new vocabulary, and take turns reading parts of the story. After this first day
with the book, Eddie will be asked to read the book aloud, with the teacher completing a running record while
he reads. During this running record, the teacher will be looking for characteristics of fluency like reading at a
proper speed, reading with expression, and taking note of what word were pronounced correctly or incorrectly.

Word Study
Learning Objectives:
Objective
The student will practice on
recognizing words with long
vowels.

Standard of Learning
Reading 1.5: The student will
apply knowledge of how print is
organized and read.

Assessment
Concentration game.

Materials needed: List all materials needed

o 2 sets of word bank cards, based on the sight words for the week. This particular set would focus
on long vowels.

Time for this part of lesson: What part of 30 minute lesson will be used for this part?
Word Study is a smaller part of the diet, at only 20%, or approximately 6 minutes of this 30 minute lesson plan.
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
Eddie will complete this game with either another student in this class or with an adult like an instructional
assistant or teacher. All of the cards in his sight word bank would be faced down. Taking the turns, the two
players will flip up two cards at a time to try and find a match. If a match is found, the player gets to keep the
pair, and if no match is made, the cards are flipped over in the same spot they were found in. The winner is
determined when all the cards are matched and the person with the most pairs of words wins!

Comprehension/ Writing
Learning Objectives:
Objective
- The student will orally
identify the main ideas
and characters of a story
during a read aloud.
- The student will
complete a graphic
organizer to help practice
writing skills.

Standard of Learning
Reading 1.9: The student will
read and demonstrate
comprehension of a variety of
fictional texts. Specifically:
F) identify characters,
setting, and important
events
H) Identify the main idea
or theme
Writing 1.13: the student will
write to communicate ideas for a
variety of purposes

Assessment
For comprehension: An audio
recording of statements and
comments will be made during
read aloud.
For writing: A graphic organizer
will be completed for writing and
checked for writing errors and
content.

Materials needed: List all materials needed

o Book- Can be two books that are similar in some way. For this lesson, the students can read two
books from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems.
o Graphic organizer- Venn diagram to compare the two stories.

Time for this part of lesson: What part of 30 minute lesson will be used for this part?
Individually, the comprehension and writing portion of the lesson plan each are worth 20% of the plan, or
approximately 6 minutes each for this 30 minute lesson plan. When combined however, this portion of the
lesson plan will be approximately 12 minutes.
Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out
During whole group, the students will be introduced to two new short stories. While the teacher reads the stories
out loud, there will be opportunities for the students to make comments and try to identify specific aspects of
the stories that are read like characters and main idea. After completing the read aloud, the students will
