Class: Mathematics

Level: 4th grade

Purpose: [Reason for teaching this lesson.]

The purpose for teaching this lesson is to give students an understanding of area and perimeter
of a square or rectangle.
Objectives: [What are the expected student outcomes?]
Students will be able to find the area of a square and rectangle.
Students will be able to find the perimeter of a square or rectangle.
Common Core Standards: [What are the Common Core Standards to be addressed?]
4.MD.3 - Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical
problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and
the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
GLOs: [List the relevant General Learner Outcomes addressed]
Self-directed Learner (The ability to be responsible for one's own learning).
Complex Thinker (The ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving).
Quality Producer (The ability to recognize and produce quality performance and quality
products).
Hawaii State Teacher Standards: [List the relevant Hawaii State Teacher Standards.]
Standard 2 Learning Differences.
Standard 7 Planning for Instruction.
Standard 8 Instructional Strategies.
Assessments: [Include assessment tasks and rubrics used to determine if lesson outcomes were
met.]

Materials/Set-Up: [Include a list of resources and materials used for the lesson.]

Procedures: [Include a detailed description of what is done at each of the following stages of
the lesson.]
a. Introduction
1. Go over homework.
b. Developmental
Students will continue to work on their floor plan.
Students must complete the floor plan by the end of the class period.
c. Concluding
Collect floor plans.
Journal entry of:
How do they feel about solving for perimeter and area?
What is still challenging?
Adaptations and Extensions: [Provide descriptions of differentiation, adaptations, and
extensions planned. Note if specific adaptations are being provided for specific students. Use
generic labeling strategy to identify students, keeping FERPA considerations in mind.]
Students will be able to create an easy floor plan or a hard floor plan. This allows students
who are unsure of their ability to solve for area and perimeter to create an easy floor plan and
work on their skills. This also allows for students who are more advanced to create a harder
floor plan and challenge themselves.
Management Considerations: [Include descriptions of planned actions to address behavioral
considerations as well as multiple modes of learning. Again, note as needed if the action
addresses specific students, using the labeling strategy detailed above.]
Students may need more assistance when creating their floor plan. I will guide them as needed
without giving them the answers.
Reflections: [Include what went well, the results of the lesson, and how the lesson could be
revised to further/improve student learning.]
Students worked efficiently on their floor plans for their dream house. One way to further
students learning would be making the lesson more difficult by requiring more rooms.

The purpose of this lesson is to introduce poetry.
Objectives: [What are the expected student outcomes?]
Students will be able to define the meaning of poetry vocabulary words and identify it in a
poem.
Students will understand what a poem is.

words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being
(e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife,
conservation, and endangered when discussing animal preservation).

Adaptations and Extensions: [Provide descriptions of differentiation, adaptations, and
extensions planned. Note if specific adaptations are being provided for specific students. Use
generic labeling strategy to identify students, keeping FERPA considerations in mind.]
Students will be grouped based on their different levels as well as their personalities.
Management Considerations: [Include descriptions of planned actions to address behavioral
considerations as well as multiple modes of learning. Again, note as needed if the action
addresses specific students, using the labeling strategy detailed above.]
Students will be given the opportunity to work in groups as well as work independently.
Reflections: [Include what went well, the results of the lesson, and how the lesson could be
revised to further/improve student learning.]
Students worked well and were on task. One way to further their lesson would be to look at
more poems like in the library.
