UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

The analyzing of the changes in matter is part of a unit covering the science of matter within the
Americas. This section requires exploration of different types of physical change within matter.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Asking the class what they know about matter and how it changes, the class will first discuss what people
already know. Afterwards, given a computer, with Microsoft word and internet access, TLW research changes of
matter through Zunal.com, and following the instruction on the site, TLW display knowledge through testing
and creating a favorite lesson plan with 100% accuracy.
Finally, they will assess their knowledge of the information through a final discussion of what was learned near
the end of the class.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Compare the causes and effects of various physical changes in matter.

Explore different types of physical changes in matter.

MATERIALS:
Materials: a computer for every child with the latest Microsoft office software, a printer, and Internet access.
Students will be using these websites:
1) Copy this link: http://easyscienceforkids.com/all-about-states-of-matter/ This website will inform you of
matter and the three most common stages.
2) Copy this link: http://idahoptv.org/sciencetrek/topics/matter/facts.cfm This website will inform you of
matter and the four most common stages. * You have to use this site to have the fourth stage of matter*
3) Copy this link: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_solid.html *This link is specifically for
information concerning solids*
4) Copy this link: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_liquid.html *This link is specifically for

The document for typing the answer the student will research is provided on the site.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

To compare the causes and effects of various physical changes in matter and to explore different types of physical
changes in matter. While finally, assessing their knowledge of the information through a final discussion of what
was learned near the end of the class.
Academic language will be addressed in IDT 3600.
The lesson will connect with future lessons and will be a foundation to other lessons about lakes within the
Americas.

I plan to use the changes in matter lesson as a foundation to an energy lesson I will teach after this lesson.
Lessons will be modified to meet the needs of my students.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

Introduction: What will you do to help the students become focused or motivated to learn in this teaching
segment?

Begin by bring a globe ball and establish that whoever has the globe ball gets to standup and speak.
Ask the children what knowledge they already have of the changes in matter, and pass the ball around to
observe what they know. (To avoid chaos, children will pass the ball to the next student with the teachers
instruction.)

Procedures:
*Lessons will be modified to meet the needs of my students.
Prior to the computer (5 mins.)
Teaching Procedures
1) The introduction begins by bring a
globe ball and establish that whoever has
the globe ball gets to standup and speak
about what they know about changes in
matter.

2) Then inform the students of what

they will being doing through the
Zunel.com site.
3) Inform them of where they will find
the Microsoft document to type their
answer for the questions on the site.
At the Computer (35 mins)

Student Procedures
1) As the teacher walks in and passes a
globe ball around. Some of you will
stand up and speak of what you know
about changes of matter.
2) Listen as the instructions of the
assignment are being given out.
3) Proceed to the computer.

1) Have the students open

1) Open up to

http://zunal.com/webquest.php?
w=278803 and inform them that all the
information of the assignment that they
need will be on the website.
2) Have the students open up the Microsoft
word answer pad found on the site to
ensure that they are answering the
correct form.
3) Monitor and Assist as needed

http://zunal.com/webquest.php?
w=278803 and listen as the information
of the assignment is being given out.
2) Open up to the Microsoft word answer
pad and submit your answer on there.
3) Afterwards, print the page of the
Microsoft word document with the
answers fully typed in and with their
name on them.

After the Computer (10 mins)

1) Discuss with the class what they
learned, and discuss what
information they would like to share
about their findings from the website.
2) Take up the completed assignment

1) Final discussion of what was learned

about the subject. Along with any
findings, from the subject, that would
like to be shared at this time.
2) Turn in the completed assignment to
the teacher.

Closure: Students will continue to discuss with the teacher and their classmates about what they learned
and what they enjoyed from the topic. At the end of class, the teacher collects reflections, checks for
assignment submissions, and discusses the importance of this lesson relating to future lessons within the
